Fenton like oxidative degradation of toxic water pollutants by iron nanoparticles synthesized via facile green route using waste iron rust as the iron precursor

Shalu Rawat et al.

Summary: In this study, waste iron rust was used as a precursor to synthesize iron nanoparticles via a green route using dried Jatropha leaf extract. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibited an extremely large specific surface area of 190.2 m(2)/g. After optimization, the iron nanoparticles effectively catalyzed the degradation of toxic organic pollutants phenol and p-nitrophenol. Both pollutants were rapidly removed within the first 30 minutes of the reaction time. The highest removal efficiencies of phenol (approximately 98%) and PNP (approximately 95%) were achieved at a nanoparticle concentration of 0.1 g/L. The degradation reaction rate followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics.

Silvia Sfameni et al.

Summary: In order to meet the requirements of sustainability and environmental protection in modern society, innovative and smart surface coatings are continuously being developed to improve or provide surface functional qualities and protective features. These needs span across various sectors such as cultural heritage, construction, maritime, automotive, environmental remediation, and textiles. Researchers and nanotechnology are primarily focused on developing new and intelligent nanostructured finishings and coatings with different implemented properties, including anti-vegetative or antibacterial, hydrophobic, anti-stain, fire retardant, drug release control, molecule detection, and mechanical resistance. Different chemical synthesis techniques are commonly used to obtain novel nanostructured materials by combining an appropriate polymeric matrix with functional doping molecules or blended polymers, as well as multicomponent functional precursors and nanofillers. Further efforts are being made to adopt green and eco-friendly synthetic protocols, such as sol-gel synthesis using bio-based, natural, or waste substances, in order to produce more sustainable (multi)functional hybrid or nanocomposite coatings, with a focus on their life cycle in accordance with the principles of circular economy.

Novel synthesis of nanoscale zero-valent iron from iron ore tailings and green tea for the removal of methylene blue

Xiaoyu Han et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoscale zero-valent iron (T-nZVI) was synthesized with iron ore tailings and green tea, and used for the efficient removal of methylene blue (MB). The formation process of T-nZVI composite nanoparticles in the complex system was investigated, as well as the impact of green tea extract dosage and pH value on its composition, particle size and reactivity. The synthesized T-nZVI nanoparticles showed amorphous spherical particles, composed of a Fe0-Al2O3 core-shell structure capped with organic substance. The removal efficiency of MB by T-nZVI nanoparticles reached up to 99.46% under optimal conditions, surpassing that of nZVI nanoparticles synthesized from chemical reagents. The decolorization mechanism may involve adsorption, reductive degradation and complex precipitation between MB molecules and T-nZVI nanoparticles. This study suggests a feasible alternative utilization of iron ore tailings for the preparation of high value-added nanomaterials in wastewater treatment.

Mingyang Song et al.

Summary: In this study, a nanocellulose-based composite, NC-nZVI, was developed for efficient removal of nickel. The nZVI was anchored to nanocellulose through a liquid-phase reduction method, resulting in varied morphology and dispersion status. Among the developed composites, CNC-nZVI showed the most evenly distributed nZVI particles. The binding between NC and nZVI was achieved through hydrogen bonds, electrostatic attractions, coordination-covalent bonds, and steric hindrance. The CNC-nZVI composite exhibited significantly higher removal efficiency of Ni2+ compared to bare nZVI, and remained effective under a wide pH range and in the presence of interference ions like NO3-, Cl-, and Ca2+. The observed hollow-out structure and Tafel extrapolation curves indicated that CNC activated diffusion path and accelerated electronic transfer from nZVI. The superior removal performance of NC-nZVI and the abundance of raw materials make it a promising material for environmental remediation and wastewater treatment.
