Biomass steam gasification kinetics: relative impact of char physical properties vs. inorganic composition

Tilia Dahou et al.

Summary: During biomass gasification, the inorganic composition has a more significant impact on the reaction kinetics than the physical properties of the char. The reasons for this are still unclear.

Thermodynamic Equilibrium Study on the Melting Tendency of the K-Ca-Mg-P-Si-O System with Relevance to Woody and Agricultural Biomass Ash Compositions

Joel Falk et al.

Summary: A major challenge in the combustion of biomass fuels is the heterogeneity of ash-forming elements, which may cause a wide range of ash-related problems. This study aimed to evaluate the melting tendency of the K-Ca-Mg-Si-P-O system using thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. The results showed that the composition and temperature had a significant impact on the formation of condensed phases and the melting tendency of the ash mixtures. The modeling approach used in this study showed qualitative agreement with previous lab-scale experiments, indicating its potential for predicting ash-related issues.

Determination of intrinsic kinetic of corncob char gasification with CO2 and steam using multipore diffusion model

Rafael D. Gomez-Vasquez et al.

Summary: The intrinsic heterogeneous reactivity of corn biochar in CO2 and steam gasification was estimated in this study. The results showed that the initial pore size distribution (PSD) of the biochar had an impact on the gasification process. The parametric fitting model revealed different activation energies and pre-exponential factors for CO2 and steam gasification. Additionally, the model reduced the activation energy differences between different PSDs.

Real-time monitoring of alkali release during CO2 gasification of different types of biochar

Yaxin Ge et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the alkali release during CO2 gasification of biochar using a surface ionization method combined with thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that alkali release rate from wood char decreases as char conversion proceeds, but increases significantly when conversion approaches completion. On the other hand, alkali release from straw char is much higher and decreases continuously during gasification. High temperature and high CO2 concentration enhance alkali release and char reactivity.

Catalytic and inhibitory roles of K and Ca in the pyrolysis and CO2 or steam gasification of Erianthus, and their effects on co-gasification performance

Kenji Koido et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic roles of Ca and K on the CO2 and steam gasification of Erianthus char, as well as the co-gasification performance of blending Erianthus with timber waste. The results showed that loading K into the demineralised char enhanced gasification processes, while loading Ca slightly inhibited CO2 gasification and significantly inhibited steam gasification. Blending Erianthus with timber waste at <= 30% promoted gas conversion and cold-gas efficiency due to the presence of inorganic components such as K in the blended feedstock.

Study on the steam gasification reaction of biomass char under the synergistic effect of Ca-Fe: Analysis of kinetic characteristics

Yuting Wu et al.

Summary: The addition of additives to biomass can affect the gasification reaction rate of biomass char particles; CaO can accelerate the reaction rate while Fe2O3 can delay it. Additionally, a combination of different catalysts can reduce the total activation energy and promote the steam gasification reaction of char.

Calcium catalytic behavior during in-situ gasification of different aged coal chars in CO2 and steam

Fangqi Liu et al.

Summary: The catalytic behavior of exchangeable calcium in coals during pyrolysis and gasification processes was studied. The experiment showed that char aging significantly changes the state and dispersion of calcium, but does not affect its catalytic action. Increasing temperature enhances gasification reactivity, while the decrease in calcium dispersion may offset the increase in catalytic activity.

Novel Assumption about the Mechanism of Catalytic Gasification: On the Basis of the Same Catalytic Effect of Alkali between C-CO2 and Fe-CO2 Reactions

Yangang Mei et al.

Summary: Catalytic gasification with alkali addition is a novel gasification technology, where the catalytic effect is attributed to the activation of CO2 on the alkali surface. A new gasification mechanism is proposed, providing new insight for the process of catalytic gasification.
