Handling noisy data in sparse model identification using subsampling and co-teaching

Fahim Abdullah et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel algorithm based on sparse identification, subsampling and co-teaching is developed to mitigate the problems of highly noisy data from sensor measurements in modeling of nonlinear systems. The proposed method yields better models in terms of prediction accuracy in the presence of high noise levels.

Metabolomic selection for enhanced fruit flavor

Vincent Colantonio et al.

Summary: By analyzing the metabolomics of tomato and blueberry varieties along with consumer ratings, statistical and machine learning models were developed to predict fruit flavor. These models are expected to facilitate the incorporation of flavor as breeding targets earlier and promote the selection and release of more flavorful fruit varieties.

Aerosol-jet-printed graphene electrochemical immunosensors for rapid and label-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva

Cicero C. Pola et al.

Summary: In this study, a rapid electrochemical immunosensor was developed using custom-formulated graphene inks and aerosol jet printing. The sensor demonstrated lower limits of detection and fast response time compared to most commercial SARS-CoV-2 antigen tests. It utilized a single-step functionalization of graphene electrodes with SARS-CoV-2 polyclonal antibody, eliminating the need for nanoparticle functionalization or secondary antibody or metallic nanoparticle labels. The immunosensor had a wide linear sensing range and did not react with other coexisting influenza viruses.

A review of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for bioanalytical sensors

Edward P. Randviir et al.

Summary: This article systematically examines the application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in electrode customization and sensor design. The study finds that immunosensors are the most common quantification technique employing EIS, with bio-based electrodes suitable for detecting complex molecules and non-bio-based sensors more often used for simpler molecules. The article also notes advancements in electrode design for EIS, but inconsistencies remain in equivalent circuit modeling for certain sensor types.

FEAST of biosensors: Food, environmental and agricultural sensing technologies (FEAST) in North America

Eric S. McLamore et al.

Summary: The biosensor research in North America faces challenges and opportunities, calling for platform approaches including tools supporting interoperability, open-source analytics tools, data algorithms, and sensor designs inspired by usage. The analysis focused on mobile devices and phone-based biosensors to enhance decision support. Results show a concentration on fundamental platform development and material characterization in biosensor research, with optical transduction being predominant in food and environmental applications, while electrochemical transduction is common in agricultural applications, with limited use of mobile platforms.

Review: Trends in point-of-care diagnosis for Escherichia coli O157:H7 in food and water

Alka Rani et al.

Summary: Escherichia coli O157:H7, a Shiga-producing E. coli, is a major pathogen in food and water, and early detection is crucial for minimizing infection. Current gold standard tests are time-consuming, so there is a need for accurate, sensitive, specific, user-friendly, rapid, equipment-free detection methods. Emerging technologies such as isothermal amplification and biosensors are considered new approaches in E. coli O157:H7 diagnostics.
