Cl-induced passivity breakdown in α-Fe2O3 (0001), α-Cr2O3 (0001), and their interface: A DFT study

Xiaoran Yin et al.

Summary: The presence of chloride ions can lead to the breakdown of protective film and localized corrosion, but the mechanism and role of chlorides in these processes are still controversial. In this study, a comparative study was conducted using density functional theory to investigate the ingress of Cl into α- Fe2O3 and α- Cr2O3 surfaces, as well as their interface. The results showed that Cl insertion into O vacancies was energetically favorable, and the interface region was identified as the weak point of the duplex passive film.

Effect of oxidation on mechanical properties of Ni/Cu interface: A density functional theory study

Soon-Dong Park et al.

Summary: The bond strength and mechanical properties of Nickel/Copper (Ni/Cu) interfaces were investigated using spin-polarized density functional theory calculations. The study found that the Cu region was prone to fracture during homogeneous stretching, due to its smaller work of separation compared to the interface. Additionally, oxidation at the interface significantly decreased the bond strength, but did not significantly alter the mechanical properties of the Ni/Cu structure.

Effects of aluminum diffusion on the oxide of the FeCrAl alloys surface: A first-principles study

Junjun Wang et al.

Summary: The formation mechanism of the FeCrAl/(Cr2O3, Al2O3) layer structure was explored using first-principles calculation. It was found that when the concentration of Al in the Cr atoms layer of Cr2O3 is lower than or equal to 50%, Al atoms tend to diffuse into Cr2O3 and enhance the bonding strength of the interface. When the concentration of Al atoms exceeds 50%, Al atoms diffuse close to the surface and the FeCrAl/(Cr2O3, Al2O3)/Al2O3 structure may be formed.

First-principles study of tensile and shear strength of Fe-Al and α-AlFeSi intermetallic compound interfaces

Muhammad Zeeshan Khalid et al.

Summary: First-principles virtual tensile and shear strength calculations were conducted on the Fe2Al5//Fe4Al13 and alpha-AlFeSi//Fe4Al13 interfaces using the FIRE algorithm for optimization. An extended generalized UBER was employed to fit the energy-displacement data, and virtual tensile strength was evaluated through RGS methodology. Comparisons were made with pure Al//Fe and Al//IMCs interfaces to understand the role of IMCs at aluminum-steel joints.

Ab initio investigations of the interfacial bond of Fe(001)/Al(001)

Soon-Dong Park et al.

Summary: Density functional theory-based ab initio simulations were used to investigate the bond strength, atomic configuration, oxidation behavior, and mechanical deformation of an Fe(001)/Al(001) coherent interface. The study found that the bond strength is significantly reduced when oxygen is introduced, leading to different fracture behaviors between the bare interface and the oxidized interface. The mechanical deformation along the lateral direction was found to have insignificant impact on the bond strength.
