Co-Delivery of Ylang Ylang Oil of Cananga odorata and Oxaliplatin Using Intelligent pH-Sensitive Lipid-Based Nanovesicles for the Effective Treatment of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Nada K. Sedky et al.

Summary: Smart pH-responsive niosomes loaded with Oxaliplatin, Ylang ylang essential oil, or both compounds significantly improved cytotoxic activity against triple-negative breast cancer cells. The co-loaded niosomes demonstrated the lowest IC50 value and induced apoptosis effectively. This study suggests that combining natural essential oil with synthetic platinum-based drugs in pH-responsive nanovesicles is a promising approach to breast cancer therapy.

Box-Behnken design of thermo-responsive nano-liposomes loaded with a platinum(IV) anticancer complex: evaluation of cytotoxicity and apoptotic pathways in triple negative breast cancer cells

Nada K. Sedky et al.

Summary: In this study, thermo-responsive liposomes (TLs) loaded with Asp (Asp/TLs) were prepared and optimized. The optimized Asp/TLs exhibited desirable physicochemical properties and high encapsulation efficiency. Asp/TLs showed the ability to release Asp under elevated temperatures and displayed high cytotoxic activity against invasive triple-negative breast cancer cells. The induction of apoptosis was achieved through the regulation of apoptotic gene expression.

PEGylated Chitosan Nanoparticles Encapsulating Ascorbic Acid and Oxaliplatin Exhibit Dramatic Apoptotic Effects against Breast Cancer Cells

Sherif Ashraf Fahmy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to design a pH-responsive dual-loaded nanosystem for the effective treatment of breast cancer. The nanosystem was based on PEGylated chitosan nanoparticles loaded with ascorbic acid (AA) and oxaliplatin (OX). The prepared nanoparticles showed high entrapment efficiencies and spherical-shaped morphology. PEGylation of the nanoparticles reduced their surface charges and enabled drug release in the acidic environment of cancer tissue. The PEGylated nanoparticles exhibited significant cytotoxic activities against breast adenocarcinoma cells and enhanced the apoptotic effect of AA and OX alone or in combination.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
