Comparison of CO2, NOx, and VOCs emissions between CNG and E10 fueled light-duty vehicles

Zongyan Lv et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of CNG/E10 bi-fuel light-duty vehicles and the characteristics of VOCs and ozone formation potential in CNG vehicle exhaust. The results show that CNG fuel can reduce CO2 emissions, improve thermal efficiency, and save fuel costs compared to E10. However, it also increases NOx and NO2 emissions. The VOCs emitted by CNG vehicles are mainly alkanes, while E10 contains high proportions of alkanes and alkenes. These findings help enhance understanding of the environmental value of using NG vehicles.

Real-Time Black Carbon Emissions from Light-Duty Passenger Vehicles Using a Portable Emissions Measurement System

Xuan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the on-road BC emissions from ten in-use light-duty passenger vehicles (LDPVs) using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) platform. The emission factors (EFs) of vehicles with gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines were found to be higher than those with port fuel injection (PFI) engines. A strong correlation was observed between vehicle speed and BC emissions, and BC emissions were linearly correlated with particle number (PN) emissions.

Diesel exhaust particulate emissions and in vitro toxicity from Euro 3 and Euro 6 vehicles

Alessandra Zerboni et al.

Summary: This study compared the emissions from a Euro 3 diesel vehicle to those from a Euro 6 car during the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The Euro 6 vehicle emitted a higher number of ultrafine particles during DPF regeneration, along with a lower content of PAHs but higher levels of metals compared to the Euro 3 diesel vehicle. In vitro experiments revealed that the Euro 3 particles activated inflammatory and procarcinogenic pathways, while the Euro 6 particles were less effective in activating these biological responses.

Summary: This work describes the preparation and optimization of g-C3N4/CeO2/Bi2O3 ternary heterojunction composite photocatalytic materials. The results show that the sample with a specific mass ratio has the highest purification efficiency for exhaust pollutants. The presence of Ce-O-Bi bonds and the decrease in band gap value indicate the potential of multilayer heterojunction in resolving photocatalyst carrier separation. The self-cleaning coatings prepared also showed promising purification efficiencies for various pollutants.

Primary organic gas emissions in vehicle cold start events: Rates, compositions and temperature effects

Zhining Zhang et al.

Summary: Identification of air toxics emitted from light-duty gasoline vehicles is important for protecting human health. This study measured the emissions of volatile organic compounds and intermediate VOCs in high-emitted start stages of China 6 LDGVs at different temperatures. The results showed that low temperature increased the emission rates of both VOCs and IVOCs, with VOCs being more sensitive to temperature change. Aromatics and alkanes dominated the cold start VOC emissions under normal temperature. Low temperature also enhanced the emission peak and peak duration of fuel components and incomplete combustion products, while high temperature only increased the peak concentration of fuel components.

Influences of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon on the epigenome toxicity and its applicability in human health risk assessment

Durgesh Nandini Das et al.

Summary: The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the air has become a global concern due to their ability to cause cancer and alter genetic material. Exposure to environmental chemicals can lead to epigenetic changes, and PAHs, in particular benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), have been classified as cancer-causing agents. Epigenetic alterations play a significant role in PAH-induced carcinogenesis, leading to changes in DNA adduct formation. Increasing evidence suggests that exposure to PAHs can lead to various diseases and increase susceptibility. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of epigenetic changes and identify potential targets and biomarkers for diseases caused by PAH exposure.

Impact of biodiesel and propanol blends on engine performance, regulated emissions and PAH formation

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: Oxygenated fuels, such as blends of biodiesel and high-alcohol content, have gained increasing interest as sustainable alternative fuels for diesel engines. This study evaluated the emissions of a diesel engine running on a biodiesel-propanol blend fuel, and found that the blend significantly reduced the levels of PAHs, a health hazard and detrimental to engine components. However, adding too much propanol to biodiesel appeared to result in an increase in PAHs and toxicity.

Formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and regulated emissions from biodiesel and n-butanol blends containing water

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effect of water-containing n-butanol-biodiesel blends on diesel engine emissions. The results showed that the use of diesel and blended fuels increased fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbon emissions. However, the use of n-butanol and n-butanol-water blends significantly reduced nitrogen oxide emissions. Compared to diesel, biodiesel and blended fuels significantly reduced total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their toxicity, but the n-butanol-water biodiesel blend increased the emissions and toxicity of PAHs.

Determination of size-segregated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and its nitro and alkyl analogs in emissions from diesel-biodiesel blends

Sergio Machado Correa et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the emissions of non-criteria pollutants, including PAHs and their nitro-PAHs and alkyl-PAHs, from biofuels and their mixtures. Results show that emissions of all PAHs increase with engine speed, but there is a reduction in total PAHs with an increase in biodiesel content, although this can lead to an increase in nitro-PAHs. High correlations were observed between PAHs and alkyl-PAHs, and between PAHs and nitro-PAHs, suggesting similar formation mechanisms for these compounds.
