Chitosan Nanoparticles as Potential Nano-Sorbent for Removal of Toxic Environmental Pollutants

Summary: Adsorption is widely used in advanced wastewater treatment, and the use of natural renewable and environmentally friendly materials has made the process easier and more profitable. Chitosan, with its numerous functional applications, is an effective biomaterial commonly used in adsorption. Its adsorption capacity and selectivity can be enhanced by adding additional functions to its structure. Chitosan nanoparticles have gained significant attention due to their unique surface properties and adsorption ability, and recent research on their synthesis methods, experimental conditions, limitations, and applications in water and wastewater treatment is critically reviewed. The use of magnetic nanoparticles for pollutant recovery and metal recovery is also discussed.

Efficient removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions using chitosan/Na-alginate bio-based nanocomposite hydrogel

Summary: This research article focuses on the elimination of toxic chromium ions Cr(VI) from simulated solution to save water resources depleted by climate change. Eco-friendly hydrogel composites, chitosan/Na-alginate/polyacrylic acid (CS/Na-Alg/PAAc) and Ni/chitosan/Na-alginate/polyacrylic acid (Ni@CS/Na-Alg/PAAc), were created as a basin for the in-situ formation of Ni nanoparticles. The composites demonstrated favorable adsorption and high removal efficiency for Cr(VI).

Gamma Irradiation Synthesis of Carboxymethyl Chitosan-Nanoclay Hydrogel for the Removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from Aqueous Media

Summary: Different weight ratios of acrylic acid were crosslinked with N,O carboxymethyl chitosan to prepare hydrogel composites, with the addition of nanoclay particles. The optimized sorbent (CsAA(3)Cl) exhibited excellent removal performance for chromium(VI) and lead(II), with removal efficiencies of 125 mg/g and 205 mg/g, respectively, within 90 minutes.

Chitosan-based nano-sorbents: synthesis, surface modification, characterisation and application in Cd (II), Co (II), Cu (II) and Pb (II) ions removal from wastewater

Summary: The physical and surface properties of sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) and vanillin (V)-modified chitosan-based magnetic nano-sorbents (TPP-CMN and V-CMN) were characterized. FE-SEM and XRD analysis showed the average size of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles between 6.50 and 17.61 nm. The TPP-CMN and V-CMN nano-sorbents exhibited high sorption capacity for heavy metal ions. The synthesis of these nano-sorbents and their efficient and cost-effective performance in wastewater treatment make them highly valuable. Rating: 8/10.

Chitosan-Based Architectures as an Effective Approach for the Removal of Some Toxic Species from Aqueous Media

Summary: Modified uncrosslinked and crosslinked chitosan derivatives were investigated as green sorbents for copper (Cu2+) and lead (Pb2+) cation removal. The adsorption capacities of the chitosan-modified products were compared, and Cs/GA/MBA exhibited the highest adsorption capacity due to stable chelate structures formed. The metal uptake process was confirmed by comparing the surface topography of the free sorbents and the metal-loaded sorbents using atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Green synthesis of chitosan/erythritol/graphene oxide composites for simultaneous removal of some toxic species from simulated solution

Summary: In this study, chitosan was modified using green methodology and verified through FTIR spectroscopy and AFM investigation. The addition of graphene oxide further enhanced the properties of the modified samples. Electron beam irradiation decreased pore size and increased surface roughness. The optimized sample showed high removal efficiency for both methylene blue dye and mercury cation.

Experimental and theoretical assessment of benzopyran compounds as inhibitors to steel corrosion in aggressive acid solution

Summary: The present work describes the environmentally friendly synthesis of two heterocyclic benzopyran compounds and their corrosion inhibition properties against API steel in hydrochloric solution. Experimental results showed significant inhibition efficiencies for the compounds at specific concentrations, with electrochemical and surface morphology analyses supporting the findings. Theoretical and molecular dynamic simulations provided further insights into the chemical structure's impact on inhibition efficiencies and adsorption processes.

The salts showed excellent corrosion inhibition and anti-scale properties, as well as antibacterial activity against sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results support the potential application of these salts in oilfield formation water treatment.

Characterization and optimization of magnetic Gum-PVP/SiO2 nanocomposite hydrogel for removal of contaminated dyes

Summary: In this study, a Gum-PVP/SiO2 nanocomposite hydrogel was prepared using gamma radiation-induced copolymerization and crosslinking. The structure of the nanocomposite hydrogel was analyzed through FTIR, XRD, and TEM analysis. The crosslinking degree increased with increasing radiation dose. The nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited higher adsorption properties towards basic dyes than acidic dyes.

Physicochemical Properties and Functional Characteristics of Ecologically Extracted Shrimp Chitosans with Different Organic Acids during Demineralization Step

The chitosans were characterized and their physicochemical properties were determined. Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was functionalized with 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) to produce functionalized graphene oxide (FGO). FGO exhibited high surface area and large pore size, as well as dentate functional groups, leading to enhanced adsorption performance for heavy metal ions. The synthesized GO and FGO were characterized using various techniques. The adsorption efficiency of FGO for Pb+2 and Al+3 metal ions was significantly higher compared to GO. The reusability study showed that FGO could be used repeatedly with a slight loss in efficiency.

The inhibition performance of morpholinium derivatives on corrosion behavior of carbon steel in the acidized formation water: Theoretical, experimental and biocidal evaluations

Summary: The study aimed to synthesize and explore the inhibitory effects of three morpholinium cationic surfactants on carbon steel corrosion in petroleum wells formation water containing 3 M HCl solution at different temperatures. The synthesized compounds were characterized by FTIR and HNMR analysis, with inhibition efficiencies reaching up to 93.1%. Temperature effects on corrosion behavior were studied and the Villamil adsorption isotherm was found to be the most suitable model. Additionally, the biocidal activity and surface morphology improvements of the surfactants were investigated, showing promising results in corrosion inhibition.
