Biocompatible Nanodiamonds Derived from Coal Washery Rejects: Antioxidant, Antiviral, and Phytotoxic Applications

Anusuya Boruah et al.

Summary: Coal washery rejects (CWRs) are chemically transformed into biocompatible nanodiamonds (NDs) with blue light emission, exhibiting strong antiviral properties and moderate antioxidant activity for potential biomedical applications. The NDs derived from CWRs possess a crystalline structure with a 100 lattice plane of a cubic diamond, and are substantially functionalized with oxygen-containing functional groups. Additionally, they show minimal inhibition on wheatgrass seed germination and seedling growth, indicating low toxicity at the highest tested concentration.

Scalable production, cell toxicity assessment, and plant growth promotion activities of carbon quantum dots derived from low-quality coal feedstock

Monikankana Saikia et al.

Summary: This study proposes a simplistic, innovative, sustainable, and economically scalable method for the formation of fluorescent nitrogen and sulphur co-doped carbon quantum dots (NS-CQDs) using subbituminous coal as feedstock. The NS-CQDs show promising opto-chemical characteristics and have potential applications in biomedicine, catalysis, and plant growth promotion.

N-Doped Carbon Dots Embedded in Silica Nanoparticles with Multicolor Luminescence for Light-Emitting Devices

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile approach for in situ synthesis of N-doped CDs in silica particles with the assistance of TMAOH as a bifunctional organic base, effectively overcoming the aggregation-caused quenching of CDs in the solid state. The resulting N-CDs/SiO2 particles exhibit bright and stable emission, with tunable emission color, making them potentially valuable for anti-counterfeiting labels and light-emitting devices.
