Morpho-Physiological and Hormonal Response of Winter Wheat Varieties to Drought Stress at Stem Elongation and Anthesis Stages

Jurica Duvnjak et al.

Summary: Drought stress can significantly reduce wheat growth and development as well as grain yield. This study investigated the morpho-physiological and hormonal responses of six winter wheat varieties to drought stress during stem elongation and anthesis stages and measured grain yield-related traits after harvest. The results showed that some varieties were more tolerant to drought while others were more sensitive.

Three-Year Survey of Fusarium Multi-Metabolites/Mycotoxins Contamination in Wheat Samples in Potentially Epidemic FHB Conditions

Valentina Spanic et al.

Summary: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a fungal disease that causes economic losses and reduces grain quality in cereals, such as wheat. The study analyzed 216 wheat samples infected with FHB using LC-MS/MS and found that certain mycotoxins/metabolites, including deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN), were highly prevalent. The co-occurrence of mycotoxins/metabolites was high, and their potential toxic effects should be considered. The results highlight the importance of analyzing modified and emerging mycotoxins/metabolites in future mycotoxin monitoring programs.

Metabolic Profiling Identifies Changes in the Winter Wheat Grains Following Fusarium Treatment at Two Locations in Croatia

Katarina Sunic et al.

Summary: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a dangerous disease of winter wheat, causing reduced yield and quality, as well as mycotoxin production. In this study, the metabolomics of infected and non-infected winter wheat samples from Croatia were analyzed using GC-MS. The results identified ten possible resistance-related metabolites in grains of FHB-resistant wheat varieties. Furthermore, susceptible wheat varieties were found to be closer to glycyl proline, decanoic acid, and lactic acid dimer, which may suppress resistance to FHB.

Early leaf responses of cell physiological and sensor-based signatures reflect susceptibility of wheat seedlings to infection by leaf rust

Valentina Spanic et al.

Summary: This comprehensive study aims to facilitate our understanding of the impact of carbohydrate and antioxidant metabolism in association with sensor-based phenotyping and leaf rust stress responses in wheat seedlings. The study found that susceptible wheat varieties showed increased cell-wall invertase expression after 24 hours of leaf rust infection, while vulnerable varieties had decreased cytoplasmic invertase levels. Vacuolar invertase expression played a significant role in moderately resistant varieties. Antioxidant enzymes such as ascorbate peroxidase and catalase protected plants from oxidative damage during the early stages of infection in moderately resistant varieties.

Physiological, Biochemical and Molecular Response of Different Winter Wheat Varieties under Drought Stress at Germination and Seedling Growth Stage

Rosemary Vukovic et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of six Croatian winter wheat varieties under drought stress at the germination/seedling growth stage. The results showed that different varieties exhibited different antioxidative and metabolic adaptation mechanisms in response to drought stress. Proline metabolism and antioxidative pathways played significant roles in wheat seedlings' response to drought stress.

Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Metabolism under Adverse Environmental Conditions: a Review

Pedro Garcia-Caparros et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are natural byproducts of oxygen metabolism, primarily generated in cell compartments such as the apoplast, mitochondria, chloroplasts, and peroxisomes. Cells have a balance between ROS generation and elimination, but this balance can be disrupted by various stress factors, leading to cellular damage. The antioxidant defense system in cells, composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, works together to scavenge ROS and plays a crucial role in plant immunity, growth, and development.

Photosynthetic Efficiency in Flag Leaves and Ears of Winter Wheat during Fusarium Head Blight Infection

Zorana Katanic et al.

Summary: Research evaluated the photosynthetic efficiency of wheat during different stages of Fusarium head blight (FHB) infection, revealing that FHB infection leads to adjustments in photosynthetic efficiency. Variability in photosynthetic adjustments was observed in flag leaves and ears, showing some variety-specific responses, with location playing a more significant role in modulating wheat's response to FHB infection.

The Most Important Fungal Diseases of Cereals-Problems and Possible Solutions

Marcin Rozewicz et al.

Summary: The level of cereal yields and quality are largely determined by crop management practices, genetic potential, and factors that may cause damage. Fungal diseases of cereals can significantly reduce yield, with factors such as weather conditions, crop rotation, soil tillage, and nitrogen fertilisation playing key roles in their occurrence. These diseases limit plant growth and development, ultimately affecting grain yield and quality.
