Sugarcane productivity and sugar yield improvement: Selecting variety, nitrogen fertilizer rate, and bioregulator as a first-line treatment

Belete Desalegn et al.

Summary: The improvement of sugarcane productivity depends on crop varieties, growth environments, and management practices. This study aimed to determine the high-performing sugarcane variety, optimal nitrogen rate, and potential bioregulator for improved sugarcane production, juice quality, and sugar yield. The results showed that the D42/58 variety outperformed the NCo-334 variety in terms of sprouting, number of tillers, plant height, number of millable canes, and sucrose percentage. Using D42/58 variety with 100 kg/ha of nitrogen and/or Agrostemin bioregulator could maximize sugarcane production, juice quality, and sugar yield.

Transgenic sugarcane with higher levels of BRK1 showed improved drought tolerance

J. Ashwin Narayan et al.

Summary: Transgenic sugarcane overexpressing BRK1 showed improved tolerance to drought stress through modulation of actin polymerization and formation of interlocking marginal lobes in epidermal leaf cells. BRK1 genes promote leaf epidermal cell morphogenesis and division in plants. The drought-induced BRK1-overexpressing lines of sugarcane exhibited significantly higher transgene expression compared with the wild-type control and also showed improved physiological parameters.

Genome-Wide In Silico Identification, Structural Analysis, Promoter Analysis, and Expression Profiling of PHT Gene Family in Sugarcane Root under Salinity Stress

Naveenarani Murugan et al.

Summary: In this study, 23 PHT genes were identified in the sugarcane genome and their phylogeny, gene structure, and conserved motifs were analyzed. The results showed that these genes were mainly involved in phosphate ion transport and stress response, with PHT1-1, PHT1-2, and PHT1-3 members showing significant up-regulation under salt stress. Furthermore, the upstream region of PHT genes contained binding sites related to salt and phosphate stress. These findings provide insights into the evolution of sugarcane PHT genes and their role in salt and phosphate stress tolerance.
