Tamarillo (Solanum betaceumCav.): A Review of Physicochemical and Bioactive Properties and Potential Applications

Tung Thanh Diep et al.

Summary: Tamarillo is a sub-tropical fruit known for its unique flavor and color that is highly nutritious and possesses various health benefits. This review summarizes the chemical composition, bioactive properties, and nutritional adequacy of tamarillo from different countries. Tamarillo is rich in vitamins, dietary fiber, and potassium, and is a good source of phenolics, carotenoids, and anthocyanins. It has been found to have antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-cancer, and prebiotic properties, as well as antimicrobial and antifungal activities. Tamarillo also exhibits higher antioxidant activity than apples and kiwifruit, and its functional applications in various industries are highlighted.

Comparative Metabolic Analysis Reveals a Metabolic Switch in Mature, Hydrated, and Germinated Pollen in Arabidopsis thaliana

Jiang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the changes in carbohydrate and energy-related metabolites during pollen hydration and germination were investigated using an untargeted metabolomic approach. The results revealed a significant increase in starch and sucrose metabolism during this process. Several metabolites, including palmitic acid, oleic acid, linolenic acid, quercetin, luteolin/kaempferol, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), were found to be elevated in hydrated pollen, suggesting potential roles in activating pollen tube emergence.

Integrated Lipidomic and Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals Phospholipid Changes in Somatic Embryos of Picea asperata in Response to Partial Desiccation

Juanjuan Ling et al.

Summary: Partial desiccation treatment (PDT) is an effective technology for promoting the germination and conversion of conifer somatic embryos (SEs). This study integrated lipidomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics analyses to reveal the molecular basis of lipid remodeling in Picea asperata SEs under PDT. Phosphatidic acid (PA) had a significant effect on SEs after PDT and was found to be the most critical lipid in the response to PDT. The activation of PLD alpha by PDT led to the increased PA content, which not only affected the physical and chemical properties of the cell membrane but also participated in plant hormone signal transduction. These findings provide insight into the molecular mechanism through which PDT promotes SE germination and fills the gap in understanding the mechanism of somatic embryo lipid remodeling in response to PDT.

Sakari Vaelimaeki et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the feasibility of somatic embryogenic suspension culture proliferation of Norway spruce, finding that proliferation in suspension was comparable to that on semisolid media but with genotypic variation. The transfer of tissue grown in suspension to semisolid media for maturation resulted in lower numbers of good-quality embryos.
