Summary: By studying the genetic variation and differentiation of Camellia drupifera populations, it was found that there were significant genetic differences and geographical structure between the populations in Hainan Island and mainland China, which was mainly due to geographical isolation and island effects. The results showed low genetic diversity in the populations, with high genetic differentiation and limited gene exchange. STRUCTURE analysis revealed a single genetic background in the mainland populations compared to different genetic backgrounds in the Hainan Island populations. The haplotype network analysis indicated that H17 was the original haplotype in Hainan Island and the H41 haplotype played an important role in the expansion of C. drupifera from Hainan Island to mainland China. Overall, these findings suggest that C. drupifera originated in Hainan Island and expanded its range to mainland China, providing valuable insights for the conservation, development, and utilization of C. drupifera resources, as well as serving as an example of how geographical isolation and island effects can drive plant lineage differentiation.

Summary: Soil fertility in forestry systems has often been limited to soil nutrients, neglecting soil morphological attributes and physical properties. This study aimed to analyze the influence of soil properties on the growth and productivity of two Eucalyptus species in different soil types. The results showed that tree growth was influenced by soil attributes, but the correlation between dominant tree height and soil properties was weak. Tree height and diameter at breast height were not affected by Eucalyptus species or soil type.

Summary: Within-population variation in individual tree growth and response to climate affects forest dynamics, resilience, and adaptation. This study combines dendrochronological analyses and a process-based ecophysiological model to examine the phenotypic variation of growth-related traits in 22 stands of five tree species across varying ecological conditions. The results show that within-population variances in sensitivity and vigor are greater than between-population variances for all species. Populations in more stressful environments exhibit lower mean and variance of sensitivity, suggesting potential adaptation at both the population level and within populations. There is a positive correlation between individual growth sensitivity and vigor in most populations, particularly in low extractable soil water environments. A trade-off may exist, potentially limiting selection and requiring consideration in forest management processes.

Summary: Aminated lignin (AL) was used for the first time in the remediation of cadmium (Cd) pollution in soil, and its nitrogen mineralization characteristics and effects on soil physicochemical properties were investigated. The results showed that AL significantly reduced the availability of Cd in soil, as indicated by the decrease in DTPA-extractable Cd content. Moreover, AL improved soil pH and absolute value of zeta potential, as well as enhanced the content of soil organic matter, total nitrogen, mineral nitrogen, and available nitrogen.

Summary: Understanding how environmental changes affect plant-pollinator interactions is important as new environmental extremes are reached. Drought can disrupt plant-pollinator interactions through its effect on moisture availability and floral trait expression. In this study, we investigated how flower size and nectar provisioning change with moisture limitation, and if seed provenance influences these traits. Results showed that different temperature and precipitation regimes affected nectar volume and flower size differently, suggesting that certain plant populations may continue investing in pollination mutualism under moisture limitation.

A two-year field trial showed that increased calcium negatively affected soil potassium availability, with a more pronounced effect on water-soluble potassium. However, calcium and potassium had no antagonistic impact on cassava, and cassava responded more promptly to potassium compared to calcium. Combined application of calcium and potassium significantly increased fresh tuber yield, with the highest yield achieved by adding 200 kg Ca ha-1 and 200 kg K2O ha-1.
