Understanding the genetic and molecular constitutions of heterosis for developing hybrid rice

Yidan Ouyang et al.

Summary: The wide adoption of hybrid rice has greatly increased rice yield in the last several decades. The utilization of heterosis facilitated by male sterility has been a common strategy for hybrid rice development. Studies have found that strong heterosis widely exists in hybrids of diverse germplasms, and inter-subspecific hybrids often display higher heterosis. Analyses of genetic and molecular mechanisms have shown that dominance, overdominance, and epistasis all play important roles in the genetic basis of heterosis. Environment-sensitive genic male sterility enables the development of two-line hybrids, and long noncoding RNAs often function as regulators of genic male sterility. Inter-subspecific hybrids show reduced fertility, but the identification and molecular characterization of hybrid sterility genes offer strategies for overcoming this issue.

Global transcriptome analysis reveals potential genes associated with genic male sterility of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

Jianxia Jiang et al.

Summary: Rapeseed is the third leading source of edible oil in the world, with genic male sterility lines playing a crucial role in harnessing heterosis for its hybrid production. Research on the pollen development in these GMS lines of rapeseed is limited, but studies have shown that abnormal development may occur at different stages. Through transcriptome analysis, numerous genes related to GMS have been identified, including key genes potentially involved in fertility regulation.

Tingting Chen et al.

Summary: The Genome Sequence Archive (GSA) and its family of resources aim to provide data storage and sharing services for worldwide scientific communities, including GSA, GSA-Human, and OMIX. GSA has updated data model and online functionalities, GSA-Human stores human genetics-related data, and OMIX provides open archive for miscellaneous data. These resources together form a family, accepting global data submissions and providing free open access for worldwide research activities.
