Assessment and mechanism analysis of plant salt tolerance regulates soil moisture dynamics and controls root zone salinity and sodicity in seasonally irrigated agroecosystems

Xinwei Yin et al.

Summary: Soil water deficit and saline-alkaline stress pose challenges to agriculture, and the effects of plant salt tolerance on soil water budget and root zone salinization and alkalization trends have not been fully understood. This study introduces a species-dependent soil water and salinity model that simulates the feedback between evapotranspiration and salinity in irrigated agroecosystems. Results show that plant salt tolerance plays a dominant role in regulating vegetation feedback and root zone salinity levels. It is important to consider plant salt tolerance for agricultural sustainability and environmental protection measures.

Combined Effects of Indigenous Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and NPK Fertilizer on Growth and Yields of Maize and Soil Nutrient Availability

Abdoulaye Fofana Fall et al.

Summary: The excessive use of mineral fertilizers in maize cultivation leads to soil contamination and higher production costs. An alternative approach is to partially replace chemical fertilizers with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) to promote nutrition and growth. The study found that combining indigenous AMF inoculation with a 50% NPK treatment significantly increased maize yield and soil-available N, P, and K compared to chemical fertilization alone.

Application of Indigenous Rhizospheric Microorganisms and Local Compost as Enhancers of Lettuce Growth, Development, and Salt Stress Tolerance

Redouane Ouhaddou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to mitigate salt stress effects on lettuce by using native biostimulants, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (M), plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (R), and compost (C). The results showed that mycorrhizal colonization was enhanced under 100 mM NaCl after compost application. The applied biostimulants, especially M and/or R, improved lettuce's salinity tolerance and increased its dry biomass. Furthermore, the biostimulants enhanced various physiological, biochemical, and nutritional characteristics, such as stomatal conductance, water content, total chlorophyll, and phosphorus content.

Sweet Corn Research around the World 2015-2020

Pedro Revilla et al.

Summary: Modern sweet corn is characterized by the presence of recessive alleles in the maize endosperm starch synthesis pathway, resulting in lower starch content and higher sugar concentration. Originally from the USA, fresh sweet corn has gained popularity worldwide as a preferred vegetable choice. Recent research has focused on endosperm genetics, breeding, and physiology in the US, but the introduction of sweet corn in other countries has led to new uses and research activities. This review summarizes sweet corn research from the five years before 2021.
