Phytoremediation potential of water hyacinth in heavy metal removal in chromium and lead contaminated water

Summary: The presence of heavy metals in river water due to industrial waste disposal has detrimental environmental effects and poses health risks. This study evaluates the phytoremediation capability of water hyacinth in treating polluted water. Results show that water hyacinth has maximum removal efficiency for various pollutants, such as pH, BOD, COD, TDS, Chromium, and Lead. The use of water hyacinth as a phytoremediation method proves to be economical and effective for treating dye industry effluents containing heavy metals.

Managing an invasive tree in coastal dunes: The importance of follow-up treatments to improve the recovery of protected habitats

Summary: Conservation of biodiversity in protected areas is often threatened by invasive alien plants (IAPs), and successful management requires proper planning, resources, and monitoring. This study reports the results of different control methods of Acacia longifolia in two forest plantations over coastal dunes in Portugal. The best results were achieved after hand pulling, but due to its high cost, this method is not suitable for large areas. Mechanical cuts resulted in variable levels of resprouting, while follow-up treatments reduced the number of resprouts and kept its cover below 20% and height below 50 cm. Controlling with brush cutters/hogs reduced the seed bank of A. longifolia by 74% while that with a disc harrow allowed a greater reduction (91%). It is expected that with the reduction of A. longifolia, species characteristic of the protected habitats will begin to emerge.

Chemical and Functional Characterization of Extracts from Leaves and Twigs of Acacia dealbata

The results showed that using 70% acetone solution for maceration extraction yielded the highest content of phenolics, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins. The non-polar fraction of the extracts was mainly composed of phytol, squalene, alpha-tocopherol, lupenone, and lupeol. The extracts exhibited antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Application of Water Hyacinth Biomass (Eichhornia crassipes) as an Adsorbent for Methylene Blue Dye from Aqueous Medium: Kinetic and Isothermal Study

This study evaluated the adsorption of a cationic dye, methylene blue, by different parts of the water hyacinth plant. The results showed that water hyacinth biomass had high adsorption capacity, with the stem biomass having a faster adsorption rate. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model, and both materials were found to be favorable for adsorption. The water hyacinth bioadsorbent thus holds potential for effluent treatment.
