Chemical composition, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of essential oils isolated from black (Piper nigrum L.) and cubeb pepper (Piper cubeba L.) fruits from the Serbian market

Aleksandra N. Milenkovic et al.

Summary: Black and cubeb pepper fruits from the Serbian market were used to obtain market-valuable essential oils. The oils showed inhibitory effects on certain bacteria and fungi, but were not bactericidal against certain strains. The results are valuable for the progress, development, and production in various industries.

Action mode of cuminaldehyde against Staphylococcus aureus and its application in sauced beef

Hui Li et al.

Summary: The antibacterial mechanism of cuminaldehyde against Staphylococcus aureus was investigated, and it was found that cuminaldehyde could damage the bacterial membrane and interact with the genomic DNA, resulting in the inactivation of cells. Furthermore, cuminaldehyde showed a dual antibacterial effect by influencing the cell membrane and genomic DNA.

The Influence of Liquid Medium Choice in Determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Essential Oils against Pathogenic Bacteria

Radka Hulankova

Summary: There is currently no internationally accepted, standardized method for determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of natural substances like essential oils. This study aimed to compare MIC values obtained from different studies that used various culture media. The results showed that the MIC values for cinnamon essential oil varied depending on the culture media used, with the median values ranging from 465 to 517 μg/mL. The MIC values for oregano essential oil were significantly lower in Mueller-Hinton Broth (MHB) compared to highly nutritious media. Additionally, the lag phase of bacterial growth in the presence of oregano essential oil was much shorter in MHB compared to other media. Therefore, MHB is not recommended for comparing the antimicrobial properties of different essential oils.

Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oils Evaluated In Vitro against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus

Michela Galgano et al.

Summary: The study found that essential oils such as lemon, pine, fennel, basil, melissa, thyme, and ginger have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The activity of ginger oil against Staphylococcus aureus strains showed a dose-effect correlation, while fennel oil showed low activity. Pine, melissa, and basil oils showed bactericidal effects against S. aureus, and lemon oil had different effects on different strains. Thyme oil showed complete inhibition of growth for both E. coli and S. aureus.

Effect of Essential Oils on Growth Inhibition, Biofilm Formation and Membrane Integrity of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus

Andres Martinez et al.

Summary: The essential oils LTC II and TV showed significant antibacterial activity and reduced the hemolytic effect of S. aureus, as well as the motility capacity of E. coli. Additionally, these oils were found to interact with lipid bilayers and alter the physicochemical properties of membranes, suggesting their potential use in the treatment of S. aureus and E. coli infections.

Summary: This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of methanolic plant extracts against multidrug-resistant bacteria and confirmed their efficacy against MRSA in experimental animals. Ten out of sixty folk plants showed activities against MDR bacteria, with Camellia sinensis and Aloysia citrodora exhibiting the highest activities against MRSA and MSSA isolates. Further studies revealed low toxicity of these plant extracts against eukaryotic cells and their potential as alternative antibacterial agents.
