Heavy Metal and Drought Stress in Plants: The Role of Microbes-A Review

Monirul Islam et al.

Summary: Plants are affected by various environmental factors, such as heavy metal contamination and drought, which have negative impacts on their growth and yield. Understanding the avoidance and tolerance mechanisms of plants towards these stress factors, as well as utilizing beneficial microbes, is of great importance in enhancing plant stress tolerance.

Plant growth promoting bacteria improve growth and phytostabilization potential of Zea mays under chromium and drought stress by altering photosynthetic and antioxidant responses

R. Vishnupradeep et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) on maize growth and phytoremediation efficiency under heavy metal pollution and drought stress. The results showed that two efficient PGPB strains, resistant to chromium and drought, significantly enhanced plant stress tolerance, photosynthetic efficiency, and chromium accumulation. Furthermore, the PGPB reduced chromate translocation by immobilizing chromium in the roots. These findings have important implications for plant growth and remediation in heavy metal polluted areas.

Beijerinckia fluminensis BFC-33, a novel multi-stress-tolerant soil bacterium: Deciphering the stress amelioration, phytopathogenic inhibition and growth promotion in Triticum aestivum (L.)

Hind A. Al-Shwaiman et al.

Summary: This study identified a strain of soil bacteria, Beijerinckia fluminensis BFC-33, that can tolerate various abiotic and biotic stresses and enhance the growth of wheat plants. The inoculation of BFC-33 increased root length, carotenoid accumulation, and defense responses in wheat seedlings. The use of multi-stress-tolerant and antagonistic plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) could be beneficial for global food security.

Bioaugmentation with copper tolerant endophyte Pseudomonas lurida strain EOO26 for improved plant growth and copper phytoremediation by Helianthus annuus

Adarsh Kumar et al.

Summary: The Cu-tolerant PGP endophytes from roots of Odontarrhena obovata showed efficient remediation of Cu contamination and exhibited promising potential to work effectively under various abiotic stress conditions. Through plant growth experiments, it was found that the endophytes significantly increased the growth of roots and shoots of plants, as well as enhanced the uptake of Cu by the plants.

Heavy Metal Concentrations in Roadside Soils on the Bialystok-Budzisko Route in Northeastern Poland

Miroslaw Skorbilowicz et al.

Summary: The study revealed that roadside soils along the Bialystok-Budzisko trunk road in Poland contain various heavy metals, with the average contents of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb higher than the background values of Polish soils. The crucial metal-binding factors in the studied soils were found to be Fe and Mn oxides. Road transport was identified as the main source of metals, with urban and agricultural areas also contributing to heavy metal pollution.

Synergistic effect of ACC deaminase producing Pseudomonas sp. TR15a and siderophore producing Bacillus aerophilus TR15c for enhanced growth and copper accumulation in Helianthus annuus L

Adarsh Kumar et al.

Summary: The study found that a consortium of bacteria with high ACC deaminase and siderophore production capabilities can significantly improve seed germination and growth of sunflower seeds, as well as reduce copper uptake in roots and shoots, compared to individual bacterial cultures. This suggests that the consortium may play an important role in enhancing plant copper uptake and improving biomass.

Effects of biochar on the migration and transformation of metal species in a highly acid soil contaminated with multiple metals and leached with solutions of different pH

Mingyun Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that acid rain enhances the mobility of metals in soil, while biochar can reduce soil metal mobility and mitigate the effects of acid rain. The effects of biochar on metal mobility depend on the species of metal, with significant immobilization of Cu, Zn, and Pb, but no effect on Cd.
