Maize-alfalfa intercropping induced changes in plant and soil nutrient status under nitrogen application

Jamal Nasar et al.

Summary: Research has shown that nitrogen fertilizer application in maize-alfalfa intercropping system can significantly improve yield, biomass dry matter, and plant-soil nutrient contents. Additionally, nitrogen fertilizer application can also enhance soil-based nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and organic matter.

Effect of Maize-Legume Intercropping on Maize Physio-Agronomic Parameters and Beneficial Insect Abundance

Jacques Fils Pierre et al.

Summary: Intercropping systems involving maize and legumes can enhance maize yield and promote the abundance of beneficial insects. This study in the Yucatan region of Mexico examined the impact of maize-legume intercropping on maize yield, physiological characteristics, and insect populations. The results suggest that maize/cowpea intercropping can be a sustainable alternative to sole maize cropping systems, increasing yield and attracting beneficial insects without increasing competition.

The Interrelationship Between Water Use Efficiency and Radiation Use Efficiency Under Progressive Soil Drying in Maize

Huailin Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that the impact of soil drying treatments on maize growth and photosynthetic efficiency varied depending on the growth stage, with early-stage drought increasing leaf WUE but late-stage drought decreasing it. Overall, leaf RUE decreased during progressive soil drying, and the interaction between canopy WUE and RUE was mainly regulated by fAPAR rather than LAI under drought conditions.
