Coix Seed: A Review of Its Physicochemical Composition, Bioactivity, Processing, Application, Functionality, and Safety Aspects

Chidimma Juliet Igbokwe et al.

Summary: Coix seed, also known as adlay or Job's tears, is a cereal grain popular in tropical Asia. It is used in Chinese traditional medicine and as a food ingredient due to its rich nutritional content and bioactive compounds. Various studies have demonstrated the biological activity of coix seed, although existing reviews on this topic are scattered and not systematic.

Effect of slightly acidic electrolyzed water on natural Enterobacteriaceae reduction and seed germination in the production of alfalfa sprouts

Chunling Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the decontamination effect of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) in the production of alfalfa sprouts. Results showed that SAEW significantly reduced Enterobacteriaceae without negative effects on sprout quality. This suggests that SAEW could be used to decontaminate natural Enterobacteriaceae in alfalfa sprout production without any adverse effects on seed quality.

Adlay Testa (Coix lachryma-jobi L. var. Ma-yuen Stapf.) Ethanolic Extract and Its Active Components Exert Anti-Proliferative Effects on Endometrial Cancer Cells via Cell Cycle Arrest

Yun-Ju Huang et al.

Summary: Endometrial cancer is a common gynecologic tumor, and the incidence has increased in recent years, particularly in Taiwan. Adlay seeds contain bioactive compounds that show potential growth inhibitory effects on endometrial cancer cells, with phenolic compounds, flavonoids, steroids, and fatty acids exerting anti-proliferative effects. The ethyl acetate extract of adlay seeds demonstrates superior activity in inhibiting the proliferation of endometrial cancer cells by inducing cell cycle arrest in the G1 or G2/M phase.
