Cold priming improves chilling resistance in wheat seedlings: Changing of photosystem II imprints during recovery from priming

Yixin Wu et al.

Summary: Chilling stress caused by frequent extreme events has negatively affected the growth and productivity of wheat. Cold priming can enhance cold tolerance of crops, but the changes in stress memory imprints during recovery from priming and their potential contribution to improved cold tolerance are not well understood.

ICE-CBF-COR Signaling Cascade and Its Regulation in Plants Responding to Cold Stress

Delight Hwarari et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved complex mechanisms to adapt to cold stress, regulated by the ICE-CBF-COR signaling pathway. This pathway regulates the expression of transcription factors and proteins, enhancing cold stress tolerance in plants.

Supplemental calcium improves freezing tolerance of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) by mitigating membrane and photosynthetic damage, and bolstering anti-oxidant and cell-wall status

Kyungwon Min et al.

Summary: Supplemental calcium (Ca2+) fertilization has been found to enhance freezing tolerance in spinach plants by reducing membrane damage, alleviating oxidative stress, and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, and APX. Additionally, Ca2+ supplementation may also help reduce loss of Ca2+ from the plasma membrane and enhance the mechanical strength of cell walls, contributing to improved freezing tolerance.

Seed priming with calcium chloride enhances wheat resistance against wheat aphid Schizaphis graminum Rondani

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that seed pretreatment with calcium chloride extended aphid development time, reduced aphid population size, and improved plant resistance against wheat aphid attack by increasing Ca2+ concentration in wheat leaves and upregulating expression levels of certain genes related to defense responses. Callose concentration in the leaves of plants grown from CaCl2-pretreated seeds increased significantly upon aphid attack, with callose deposition mainly observed in the phloem.
