Microgreens: A Next Generation Nutraceutical for Multiple Disease Management and Health Promotion

Anamta Rizvi et al.

Summary: Microgreens are young vegetable leafy greens that offer high nutritional value and health-promoting elements. They can be a great alternative to mature vegetables, especially in countries like India where chronic diseases are on the rise and average vegetable intake is low. This article explores the nutritional and biochemical makeup of microgreens, growth variables, and health benefits, suggesting their potential in reducing the risk of chronic diseases and improving human health.

Dietary Antioxidants and their Potential Role in Human Disease Management

Rashmi Saini et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are eliminated by the antioxidant defence systems in our body. While low concentrations of ROS are beneficial for defense against microorganisms and intracellular signaling, higher amounts can lead to negative chain reactions and various pathological conditions. Maintaining a delicate balance between antioxidants and oxidants provides protection against the harmful effects of ROS. Increased ROS and oxidative stress play a key role in the development of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular diseases. Both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses help prevent ROS accumulation. Imbalances between oxidative stress and antioxidant defense systems cause irreversible changes in cellular components and disrupt normal cell signaling mechanisms. Dietary antioxidants, including vitamins, minerals, carotenes, and flavonoids, play an important role in the effective management of various human diseases.

Polyphenols: a route from bioavailability to bioactivity addressing potential health benefits to tackle human chronic diseases

Silvia Vivarelli et al.

Summary: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are major global causes of mortality and morbidity. Unhealthy lifestyle habits are closely associated with NCDs, and improving these habits may help alleviate symptoms and prolong the life expectancy of affected individuals. Polyphenols (PPLs) derived from plants have shown positive results in preventing and treating NCDs and are considered safe.

Influence of Microgreens Biofortification with Selenium on Their Quantitative and Qualitative Parameters

Ivana Mezeyova et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of differentiated mineral nutrition on the content of selenium, chlorophylls, and other minerals in microgreens species. The results showed that selenisation significantly increased selenium content in all tested species without impacting yield. Chlorophyll content varied significantly between species, while the influence of selenisation on other minerals was influenced by genetic variability.

The Biometric Parameters of Microgreen Crops Grown under Various Light Conditions

Barbara Fraszczak et al.

Summary: By growing 28 microgreens crops under fully controlled conditions in different light sources, it was found that red light significantly increased the fresh and dry weights of more than half of the species, while the light spectrum had a lesser influence on the length of the plants. Nasturtium showed particularly strong growth performance compared to other species.

Preharvest Nutrient Deprivation Reconfigures Nitrate, Mineral, and Phytochemical Content of Microgreens

Marios C. Kyriacou et al.

Summary: Microgreens, as a novel class of functional foods, are rich in nutrients and phytochemicals but also accumulate antinutritive agents such as nitrate. Nutrient deprivation before harvest (DBH) can effectively reduce nitrate levels in microgreens, with varying responses among different species. Further research is needed to understand the impact of DBH on sensory and bioactive profiles of microgreens.
