ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE 4 coordinates eoplast formation to ensure acquisition of seed longevity during maturation in Medicago truncatula

Julia Zinsmeister et al.

Summary: Seed longevity is important for preserving genetic diversity, and it is acquired during late maturation through the dismantlement of chloroplasts. The gene ABI4 plays a role in coordinating this process in Medicago truncatula, as its mutation leads to increased chlorophyll retention and reduced longevity. The study also found that the shutdown of photosynthesis during maturation is crucial for the acquisition of seed longevity.

Arabidopsis EIN2 represses ABA responses during germination and early seedling growth by inactivating HLS1 protein independently of the canonical ethylene pathway

Renkang Guo et al.

Summary: The molecular mechanisms underlying the antagonistic effects of the plant hormones ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) on seed germination and early seedling establishment are unclear. This study uncovered an independent role for ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE 2 (EIN2) in regulating the ABA response, which depends on the positive regulator of ABA responses, HOOKLESS 1 (HLS1). Protein interaction assays supported a direct physical interaction between EIN2 and HLS1. The study revealed that EIN2 modulates ABA responses by repressing HLS1 function, independently of the canonical ethylene pathway.

Endosperm Persistence in Arabidopsis Results in Seed Coat Fractures and Loss of Seed Longevity

Joan Renard et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between TFs AtHB25 and ICE1. The lack of ICE1 suppresses the enhanced seed longevity and impermeability of the overexpressing mutant athb25-1D, while seed coat lipid polyester deposition is not affected. Another mutant zou-4, which lacks the transcriptional program for proper endosperm maturation, also shows high sensitivity to seed aging.

Parental and Environmental Control of Seed Dormancy in Arabidopsis thaliana

Mayumi Iwasaki et al.

Summary: Seed dormancy is an evolved plant trait that enhances seedling survival by avoiding germination under unsuitable environmental conditions. Recent research has shown that the mother plant can modulate its progeny seed dormancy by changing specific aspects of seed coat and endosperm development.

Studies on the interactions of AFPs and bZIP transcription factor ABI5

Jinkui Wei et al.

Summary: The study revealed that AFP1 interacts with ABI5 by binding to its transcriptional activation domain, potentially modulating its transcriptional activity. The interaction between AFPs and ABI5 may be regulated through a CKII-dependent pathway, as mutations in residues related to CKII phosphorylation motifs affected their interactions.

Newly Developed MAGIC Population Allows Identification of Strong Associations and Candidate Genes for Anthocyanin Pigmentation in Eggplant

Giulio Mangino et al.

Summary: The development of the first eggplant MAGIC population provides a valuable tool for the genetic dissection of complex traits in eggplant. Through genotyping and phenotyping analysis, strong associations between traits and specific genes were identified. This population is the largest recombinant population in eggplant and is significant for eggplant genetics and breeding studies.

Seed DNA damage responses promote germination and growth in Arabidopsis thaliana

Wanda M. Waterworth et al.

Summary: The desiccated, quiescent state of seeds allows for extended survival of the embryonic plant. However, the accumulation of genome damage during this state impairs germination and threatens plant survival. This study reveals that imbibed Arabidopsis seeds exhibit high resistance to DNA damage, which is lost during germination. Seeds minimize the impact of DNA damage by reducing meristem disruption and delaying programmed cell death, thus promoting early root growth. These findings provide insight into the importance of plant DNA damage responses and the mechanisms that maintain seed longevity.

Gene co-expression analysis of tomato seed maturation reveals tissue-specific regulatory networks and hubs associated with the acquisition of desiccation tolerance and seed vigour

Elise Bizouerne et al.

Summary: By analyzing the RNA sequences of different seed tissues, several gene modules associated with the physiological traits of seeds were identified. Dormancy is gradually released during fruit ripening, accompanied by an increase in seed vigor. Some gene modules involve gene expression regulation related to seed vigor.

The DREAM complex represses growth in response to DNA damage in Arabidopsis

Lucas Lang et al.

Summary: DNA damage can reduce plant growth and cell proliferation, and the interaction among RBR1, NAC044, and DREAM components play important roles in mediating growth arrest after DNA damage in plants. Multiple DREAM complexes exist and work together with NAC044 to regulate the response to DNA damage.

Genetic diversity of tomato response to heat stress at the QTL and transcriptome levels

Estelle Bineau et al.

Summary: The study found that high temperature significantly affects characteristics such as yield and quality of tomatoes, but also identified genotypes that are stable under high temperature. By calculating the plasticity index, researchers discovered 69 QTLs involved in the response of tomatoes to heat stress. In terms of transcriptome changes, 837 genes were found to be differentially expressed in the ovaries of six genotypes with contrasting responses to heat stress.

Dataset for transcriptome and physiological response of mature tomato seed tissues to light and heat during fruit ripening

Elise Bizouerne et al.

Summary: Seed vigor is an estimation of how well a seed lot can establish seedlings under various environmental conditions, with embryo and endosperm playing distinct roles in germination behavior. The genetic programs governing seed vigor traits are influenced by environmental conditions, and factors like light and temperature impact the molecular mechanisms related to seed vigor. Through RNA sequencing on differentially treated tomato seed tissues, it was found that there are distinct gene expressions and functional annotations related to seed vigor.
