Integration of physiology, metabolome and transcriptome for understanding of the adaptive strategies to long-term nitrogen deficiency in Citrus sinensis leaves

Ming-Yi Peng et al.

Summary: The contribution of nitrogen-deficiency-responsive metabolites and genes to long-term nitrogen-deficiency tolerance in Citrus, specifically sweet orange seedlings, is still poorly understood. Through studying the metabolites and genes that respond to long-term nitrogen-deficiency, as well as the impacts on physiological parameters in leaves, it was found that extensive gene and metabolite reprogramming occurred. These findings provide new information on the adaptive strategies of leaves to long-term nitrogen-deficiency.

Effects of Nitrogen Deficiency and Resupply on the Absorption of Mineral Nutrients by Tangor Cultivar 'Shiranuhi' (Citrus unshiu x C. sinensis) Grown in a Hydroponic System

Seong Heo et al.

Summary: Tangor cultivars, obtained through hybridization of Citrus unshiu and C. sinensis, have gained popularity in many countries. However, there has been less research on tangor compared to mandarin in terms of physiology and cropping technology. This study examined the effects of nitrogen deficiency and resupply on mineral nutrient uptake in a specific tangor cultivar 'Shiranuhi' using a hydroponics system. The results show a direct relationship between nitrogen and other mineral nutrients in tangor cultivation under hydroponics, suggesting the potential application of this system in Northeast Asia for increased production of high-quality fruits.

Physiological and Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis Provide Insight Into Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Root Senescence in Response

Lingxiao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of low nitrogen on root senescence in cotton. Results showed that nitrogen starvation induced premature leaf senescence but delayed root senescence due to increased catalase activity and decreased malonaldehyde content with low nitrogen treatment. Changes in gene expression also indicated upregulation of glutathione and ascorbate peroxidase synthesis genes and downregulation of ABA, apoptosis, caspase, and cell cycle-related genes. Overall, this study provides new insights into the effects of nitrogen starvation on root senescence.

The role of amino acid metabolism in signaling and metabolic adaptation to stress-induced energy deficiency in plants

Bjoern Heinemann et al.

Summary: Plants adapt their metabolism to stress-induced energy deficiency by undergoing significant changes in amino acid metabolism. Amino acids can act as alternative substrates for respiratory pathways and also as signaling molecules in response to stress. The regulation of amino acid metabolism during energy deprivation is controlled by the balance between TOR and SnRK signaling, with some amino acids potentially serving as nutrient signals to promote a shift from catabolic to anabolic pathways.
