Blood-based biomarkers of agitation in Alzheimer's disease: Advances and future prospects

Shankar Tumati et al.

Summary: Agitation is a common symptom in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and its treatment is urgently needed. Recent research on blood-based biomarkers of agitation in AD has provided new insights into its mechanisms and potential treatments. Inflammatory biomarkers are increased in patients with agitation and may predict the development and severity of agitation. Other biomarkers associated with agitation include markers of oxidative stress, brain cholesterol metabolism, and motor activity. These biomarkers have the potential to predict and monitor treatment response in interventional studies for agitation.

Neuropsychiatric or Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD): Focus on Prevalence and Natural History in Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia

Valentina Lagana et al.

Summary: Neuropsychiatric or behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common in patients with dementia and should not be underestimated. This study examines the prevalence and natural history of BPSD in patients with behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results show that BPSD affect a high percentage of dementia patients and have different profiles in the two types of dementia.

Factors associated with aggressive behaviour in persons with cognitive impairments using home care services: A retrospective cross-sectional study

Angela Schnelli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the frequency of documented aggression towards health professionals in home care services by cognitively impaired individuals. Factors such as cognitive, communication, and mobility difficulties were found to be associated with aggressive incidents. Specific educational and training interventions for healthcare specialists assisting clients with cognitive impairments are indicated based on the study findings.

Rationale, Design, and Methodology of a Prospective Cohort Study for Coping with Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia: The RECage Project

Eleni Poptsi et al.

Summary: The RECage study aims to assess the effectiveness of SCU-B in alleviating BPSD and improving the QoL of PwD and their caregivers. Results are expected to show that patients admitted to SCU-Bs have lower rates of BPSD, improved QoL, lower cost of care, and reduced psychotropic drug consumption, while those followed in no-SCU-Bs are likely to have earlier admission to nursing homes. The study will provide recommendations for the implementation of SCU-Bs where they are scarce or non-existent.
