Self-defense mechanisms of microorganisms from the antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles: Highlight the role of extracellular polymeric substances

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) released by Escherichia coli (E. coli) on the dissolution and sulfidation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and the associated growth inhibition to E. coli. The results show that EPS inhibited AgNPs dissolution, but facilitated the reductive transformation of Ag+ to Ag(0) under simulated sunlight. EPS also enhanced the colloidal stability of AgNPs and promoted sulfidation, thereby reducing the available dissolved Ag+ ions and relieving the antibacterial activity of AgNPs to E. coli.

Summary: This study used a novel pulsed-gradient Ag+ (AgNO3) exposure method and a TK-TD model to predict the accumulation and toxicity of Ag+ released from AgNPs in zebrafish larvae, as well as to understand the mechanism of Ag+ release in vivo. The results showed that AgNPs released around twice as much Ag+ in the body compared to a single Ag+ pulse-exposure system, and toxicity was mainly caused by gradually released Ag+ rather than AgNPs themselves.

Effects of concentration and chemical composition of natural organic matter on the aggregative behavior of silver nanoparticles

Mathieu Millour et al.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in consumer products and their interactions with natural organic matter (NOM) in aquatic environments significantly affect their aggregation behavior and size distribution. NOM fractions with different chemical compositions play a crucial role in promoting or stabilizing the formation of AgNP aggregates of varying sizes. The presence of both salt and NOM compounds alters the size distribution of silver aggregates, with aromatic and aliphatic carbon content in NOM playing a key role in influencing the aggregation behavior of AgNPs.
