Olive mill solid waste gasification in a pilot-scale downdraft gasifier with three-stage air supply: performance, mass-energy balance and fate of inorganic elements

Gaelle Ducom et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of olive mill solid waste (OMSW) as a fuel in a pilot-scale downdraft gasifier. After pelletization and characterization, gasification experiments were conducted with air as the gasifying agent. The performance of the gasifier was evaluated through the analysis of syngas composition, solid residues, and energy balances. The results showed that OMSW has substantial energy potential and could help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, but there were concerns regarding ash melting point, tar content in syngas, and NOx emissions.

Understanding acidogenesis towards green hydrogen and volatile fatty acid production-Critical analysis and circular economy perspective

Shikha Dahiya et al.

Summary: The acidogenic fermentation process for the production of short-chain fatty acids (VFAs) is gaining attention for bioenergy production. However, scaling up and commercialization remain challenges due to the need for optimization of production yields and cost-effective separation techniques. This review discusses microbial distribution, factors impacting acidogenic productivity, important separation techniques, and the integration of acidogenesis in a closed-loop biorefinery framework. It also highlights the role of acidogenesis in the current circular economy perspective.

Distribution patterns of functional microbial community in anaerobic digesters under different operational circumstances: A review

Run-ze Xu et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion processes are crucial for resource recovery from organic wastes or wastewater. The role of functional anaerobic microorganisms is highlighted, but there is a lack of understanding of how different operational factors affect microbial communities. This review addresses the main functional microorganisms in AD, their response to various operational parameters, and potential research directions to enhance AD performance.

Co-fermentation of municipal waste streams: Effects of pretreatment methods on volatile fatty acids production

Isaac Owusu-Agyeman et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of direct enzyme cocktail addition and other pretreatment methods on VFA production through cofermentation of primary sludge and external organic waste under initial alkaline and acidic conditions. Direct enzyme addition significantly enhanced VFA production under the alkaline condition, while a moderate increase was observed under the acidic condition. Additionally, different pretreatment methods showed varying impacts on VFA production and composition.
