The effect of combined pollution by PAHs and heavy metals on the topsoil microbial communities of Spolic Technosols of the lake Atamanskoe, Southern Russia

Andrey Gorovtsov et al.

Summary: Contamination with heavy metals and PAHs influences soil microbial community structure, leading to complex redistribution of microbial communities on a systemic level. Despite high levels of pollutants, microbial communities demonstrate adaptability and potential for environmental stress response.

The relationships between soil physicochemical properties, bacterial communities and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in soils proximal to coking plants

Review on the contamination and remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal soil and sediments

Chaomeng Dai et al.

Summary: The rapid economic and population growth in coastal areas has led to serious PAHs pollution. This review compared the pollution characteristics of different coastal areas and summarized the remediation methods for PAHs contamination in soil and sediments. It also introduced new green and sustainable systems. Integrated approaches are the best choice for PAHs remediation, but new technologies are still needed due to environmental heterogeneity.

GTDB: an ongoing census of bacterial and archaeal diversity through a phylogenetically consistent, rank normalized and complete genome-based taxonomy

Donovan H. Parks et al.

Summary: The Genome Taxonomy Database (GTDB) provides a phylogenetically consistent taxonomy for prokaryotic genomes sourced from the NCBI database. It includes a large number of bacterial and archaeal genomes, highlights the importance of metagenome-assembled genomes, and discusses improvements to the GTDB website and the procedure for updating species clusters.

Accumulation and distribution of persistent organic pollutants in surface sediment of the estuarine region and correlation between genetic and environmental factors: A case study

Phuoc-Cuong Le et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the accumulation and distribution of OCPs and PCBs in the An Hoa Estuary, Central Vietnam, and found the ecological risk to range from low to moderate levels. Furthermore, genetic factors in the form of N-acetyltransferase system phenotype were also analyzed, revealing significant variations among residents in the region, with slow acetylator phenotype prevalent in certain locations.

Salinity controls soil microbial community structure and function in coastal estuarine wetlands

Guangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study characterized soil bacterial communities and microbial functional genes in a coastal wetland ecosystem across a salinity gradient, revealing the critical role of soil salinity as an environmental filter on microbial diversity and biogeochemical processes. Higher bacterial richness and phylogenetic diversity were observed in saline soils, with specific taxa more prevalent in different salinity conditions. Salinity filtering effect shapes soil bacterial community composition and inhibits soil biogeochemical processes in estuary ecosystems.
