Physico-chemical and functional characterization of polysaccharide purified from mangrove Rhizophora mucronata leaves having potent biological activity

Natwar Jha et al.

Summary: Rhizophora mucronata Leaves Polysaccharide (RMLP) was extracted and purified from the mangrove Rhizophora mucronata leaves. The physicochemical characterization of RMLP was evaluated, revealing its high molecular weight, pseudoplastic fluid behavior, and thermal stability. RMLP also showed antibiofilm and antioxidant activities. These findings suggest the potential therapeutic use of RMLP in functional foods and medicines.

Anti-biofilm activity of LC-MS based Solanum nigrum essential oils against multi drug resistant biofilm forming P. mirabilis

Jamal M. Khaled et al.

Summary: Urinary tract infections are the second most important diseases worldwide, primarily due to the increased antibiotic resistant microbes. This study focused on inhibiting the biofilm formation of Proteus mirabilis using essential oils extracted from Solanum nigrum, showing significant antimicrobial activity at 200 µg/mL. Various experiments confirmed the anti-biofilm effect of these essential oils through different methods, highlighting their potential as a natural remedy for combating urinary tract infections caused by P. mirabilis.

Comparison of mangrove (Avicennia marina) metal tissue concentrations to ambient sediment with an extensive range of contaminant levels in a highly-modified estuary (Sydney estuary, Australia)

C. H. Besley et al.

Summary: Statistically distinct 'high', 'moderate' and 'low' metal contamination positions were identified in five Sydney estuary embayments. Mangrove root tissue assimilated higher sedimentary metal concentrations compared to seagrasses, with smaller uptake in pneumatophore tissue. The study suggests that sedimentary metals are predominantly assimilated into mangrove root tissue.

Carbon sequestration and storage in planted mangrove stands of Avicennia marina

Kathiresan Kandasamy et al.

Summary: The research showed that planted mangrove stands have high potential for carbon storage and sequestration, especially in terms of soil and tree biomass. The carbon sequestration and storage in mangrove soil increased with higher levels of silt, clay, moisture, and nutrients, but decreased with higher levels of temperature, salinity, pH, bulk density, and sand.
