Environmental Factors Regulate Plant Secondary Metabolites

Mirwais M. M. Qaderi et al.

Summary: Abiotic environmental stress can affect plant metabolism, leading to changes in secondary metabolites. However, the response of these compounds to climate change is not well understood. As the effects of climate change continue to increase, understanding the regulation of secondary metabolism becomes more important. Research is ongoing to investigate the effects of climate change components on secondary metabolites, such as phenolics, terpenes, and alkaloids, and their interactions. Understanding the role of secondary metabolites in plant adaptation to climate change is crucial.

Morpho-physiological and biochemical response of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to drought stress: A review

Utsav Bhandari et al.

Summary: Drought is the main cause of global food shortages, negatively impacting the physiological and morphological characteristics of rice and reducing overall productivity. Rice plants respond to drought through tolerance, avoidance, and escape mechanisms. Mitigation techniques such as choosing drought-tolerant cultivars and maintaining adequate moisture levels can help reduce drought stress.

Strategies to deal with drought-stress in biological nitrogen fixation in soybean

Vanessa Fogaca de Freitas et al.

Summary: The soybean production system in Brazil and other South American countries relies heavily on biological nitrogen fixation, but drought can impair this process. Strategies to combat drought include breeding, selection of tolerant rhizobial strains, co-inoculation with other beneficial microorganisms, and improved soil management practices.

The flavonoid biosynthesis regulator PFG3 confers drought stress tolerance in plants by promoting flavonoid accumulation

Li Baozhu et al.

Summary: Secondary metabolite flavonoids, particularly flavonol glycosides 3 (PFG3), play a significant role in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. This study investigates the involvement of PFG3 in plant flavonoid synthesis and drought/osmotic stress responses. The results show that PFG3 is a transcription factor located in the nucleus with activator activity. The expression of key flavonoid synthesis genes is reduced in PFG3-deficient mutants, leading to impaired flavonoid accumulation, especially flavonols. The mutants also exhibit increased sensitivity to osmotic and drought stresses, with reduced biomass accumulation and acclimation ability. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of PFG3 in enhancing plant tolerance to drought/osmotic stress through the regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis.

Impact of Climate Change on Dryland Agricultural Systems: A Review of Current Status, Potentials, and Further Work Need

Mukhtar Ahmed et al.

Summary: This review examines the threats of climate change and unsustainable management to dryland agricultural systems and provides suggestions for technology-based interventions. It emphasizes the importance of careful management of agricultural resources and the need for regional collaborations. Process-based modeling is used to assess the impacts of climate change and design management options, while diversification in crop and livestock farming systems is needed for sustainable profitability. The focus is on recommending agro-adaptation measures to be included in future policies for sustainable agricultural production systems.

Interactive effects of salinity and drought stress on photosynthetic characteristics and physiology of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) seedlings

Selda Ors et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of drought and salt stress on tomato seedlings' growth, physiological parameters, and mineral nutrient composition. The results showed that both drought and salinity stress individually had significant impacts on the tomato seedlings, leading to decreased photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll reading value, and plant dry weight. Additionally, the combination of drought and salinity stress resulted in a more pronounced decrease in fresh weight and dry weight of the tomato seedlings, along with alterations in the mineral nutrient composition.

Effect of glutamic acid foliar applications on lettuce under water stress

Giulia Franzoni et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of glutamic acid in counteracting water stress in romaine lettuce, showing a reduction in yield but not significant changes in quality parameters. Glutamic acid application had slightly positive effects on nitrate and proline contents, indicating a possible mode of action involving these molecules.
