Identification of geological characteristics from construction parameters during shield tunnelling

Tao Yan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a framework to identify geological characteristics using a fuzzy C-means algorithm based on borehole data and operational data. The identified factors are significantly reduced by principal component analysis, and the types of geological characteristics are determined using the fuzzy C-means model.

Stability Risk Assessment of Underground Rock Pillars Using Logistic Model Trees

Ning Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel application of Logistic Model Trees (LMT) to predict the stability of underground pillars. The results show that the proposed LMT model has the highest accuracy among other common machine learning methods previously employed in the literature, and the average stress and the ratio of pillar width to height are identified as the most influential parameters.

Panagiotis G. Asteris et al.

Summary: A model for estimating the compressive strength of concretes incorporating metakaolin was developed and evaluated using soft computing techniques. The model took into account six parameters as input data and was able to accurately estimate the compressive strength, considering the usage of metakaolin. The study highlighted the nonlinear influence of mix components on the resulting concrete compressive strength.

Optimized functional linked neural network for predicting diaphragm wall deflection induced by braced excavations in clays

Chengyu Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, finite element analyses and the hardening small strain model were used to investigate the deflection of diaphragm walls in soft clay layers during braced excavations. The results showed that the functional linked neural network is an effective solution for predicting wall deflection, and the application of different functional expansions and activation functions significantly influences the predictions. Additionally, hybrid models combining swarm-based optimization algorithms with the functional linked neural network outperformed the basic models in terms of accuracy.

A novel liquefaction study for fine-grained soil using PCA-based hybrid soft computing models

Sufyan Ghani et al.

Summary: Earthquake-induced liquefaction is a phenomenon that causes catastrophic damages, and assessing soil liquefaction behavior is crucial for geotechnical engineers. This study developed PCA-based hybrid computational models to predict soil liquefaction behavior and determined the best predictive model through Rank Analysis. The PCA-ELM hybrid computational model can be seen as a new alternative tool to assist geotechnical engineers in evaluating soil liquefaction potential during the preliminary design stage.
