Polymicrobial biofilms related to dental implant diseases: unravelling the critical role of extracellular biofilm matrix

Raphael C. Costa et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the role of the EPS matrix in biofilm growth, virulence, and implant-related infections on dental implant surfaces. EPS-enriched biofilms promote microbial accumulation, microbiological shift, cross-kingdom interaction, antimicrobial resistance, and biofilm virulence, leading to peri-implant tissue damage. However, the importance of EPS in implant-related infections and the development of matrix-targeted therapeutic strategies have been neglected. Therefore, further analysis of polymicrobial interactions within the EPS matrix and the development of EPS-targeting technologies are needed to disrupt the complex biofilm microenvironment for better translation to implant applications in the future.

The Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Effects of Silver Nanoparticles Coated Titanium Implants: A Narrative Review

Havard J. Haugen et al.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles incorporated in dental implants show promising antibacterial properties and reduced cytotoxicity, but further studies are needed to evaluate long-term systemic effects and conditions in the oral cavity for clinical translation.

Fitting pieces into the puzzle: The impact of titanium-based dental implant surface modifications on bacterial accumulation and polymicrobial infections

Raphael C. Costa et al.

Summary: There is currently no consensus on the best Ti surface to reduce bacterial colonization on dental implants. Emerging smart release or on-demand activation surface coatings may be the most effective alternative for reducing microbial colonization on Ti surfaces, and future studies should focus on these technologies.

Targeting implant-associated infections: titanium surface loaded with antimicrobial

Joao Gabriel Silva Souza et al.

Summary: This study focuses on biofilm formation on titanium dental implants, therapeutic and preventative strategies, as well as coatings developed using different antibiotics for titanium surfaces. It also sheds light on potential alternative strategies aiming to reduce microbial loads and control polymicrobial infection on implanted devices.
