Quantitative and qualitative analysis of antimicrobial usage and biosecurity on broiler and Sonali farms in Bangladesh

Nelima Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial use is a major contributor to the increasing antimicrobial resistance in humans and animals. This study aimed to quantify the antimicrobial use and assess the biosecurity status of broiler and Sonali farms in Bangladesh. The results showed a high overuse of antimicrobials in both types of poultry production, along with a low level of biosecurity practices. Urgent action is needed to raise awareness, improve biosecurity, and reduce antimicrobial use in these production systems.

Molecular Detection of Colistin Resistance mcr-1 Gene in Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli Isolated from Chicken

Md Bashir Uddin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial resistance and presence of the mcr-1 gene in E. coli isolates from chicken feces in Bangladesh. The isolates showed high resistance to various antibiotics, including colistin. The study confirmed the presence of the eaeA gene and mcr-1 gene in the isolates, and identified a similarity between colistin-resistant genes. The findings highlight the necessity of implementing strict measures to reduce the imprudent use of antibiotics in agriculture and poultry farming.

Epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli in broiler chickens, farmworkers, and farm sewage in Bangladesh

Amit Kumar Mandal et al.

Summary: The study found high levels of antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from broiler chickens, the environment, and farmworkers in Bangladesh, suggesting a potential spread of multidrug-resistant strains in these settings. Risk factors for infection with multidrug-resistant E. coli in broiler chickens included the winter season, absence of specific shoes for staff, and the use of antibiotics without veterinarian's prescription.

Sink survey to investigate multidrug resistance pattern of common foodborne bacteria from wholesale chicken markets in Dhaka city of Bangladesh

Mst Sonia Parvin et al.

Summary: A survey conducted in five wholesale chicken markets in Dhaka, Bangladesh, revealed a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant foodborne bacteria in cloacal swab and sewage samples. The findings highlight the potential public health risk and environmental hazards associated with the spillover of these antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
