Frankincense of Boswellia sacra: Traditional and modern applied uses, pharmacological activities, and clinical trials

Shaden A. M. Khalifa et al.

Summary: Since the 19th century, Boswellia sacra has been known for its economic and cultural values. It is cultivated in Oman and Yemen and used as a natural source of frankincense. Recent studies have shown that it has various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer effects. Clinical trials have also demonstrated its effectiveness against certain diseases. Further research is needed to explore its potential and protect the trees from extinction.

Towards Advances in Medicinal Plant Antimicrobial Activity: A Review Study on Challenges and Future Perspectives

Natalia Vaou et al.

Summary: The increasing incidence of drug-resistant pathogens has led to a need for identifying new bioactive compounds from medicinal plants. Plant-derived compounds offer potential in combating pathogenic bacteria, but faces challenges in extraction, testing, and characterization. Research on mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of medicinal plant extracts is crucial for developing novel antimicrobial agents.

Antimicrobial activity of the volatile substances from essential oils

Mareshah Abers et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial properties of volatile substances present in various essential oils, finding potent antimicrobial activity in several essential oil constituents such as rosemary, tea tree, and cassia, while clove had minimal antimicrobial activity. These results support historical evidence of the antimicrobial activity of essential oil volatile constituents and suggest potential medical implications for using aromatic essential oils in treating respiratory and dermatological infections.
