Comparative Genomics of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli Strains Isolated from Pediatric Patients with and without Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome from 2000 to 2016 in Finland

Xiangning Bai et al.

Summary: STEC infection can cause various illnesses and the fatal HUS. The molecular mechanism underlying the pathogenicity of STEC infection is not fully understood. This study identified bacterial genetic factors associated with the risk of HUS and poor renal outcome. Nonbacterial factors, such as host immunity, may also affect the virulence and clinical outcomes of STEC infection.

Engineering Escherichia coli to produce and secrete colicins for rapid and selective biofilm cell killing

Xing Jin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the anti-biofilm activities of colicins E1, E2, and E3 using cell-free protein synthesis, identifying E2 with DNase activity as the most effective at killing target biofilm cells while leaving non-targeted biofilms unharmed. Engineered probiotic Escherichia coli organisms were able to synthesize and secrete colicin E2, inhibiting biofilms and killing preformed indicator biofilms. These findings suggest the potential of using engineered microorganisms to produce antimicrobial colicin proteins as a therapeutic strategy for biofilm-associated infections.
