Effects of particle size on biomass pretreatment and hydrolysis performances in bioethanol conversion

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: The size of biomass particles affects biomass preprocessing, pretreatment, and enzymatic hydrolysis. Smaller particles experience more severe pretreatment and structural composition removal, leading to slightly higher enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. However, the low sugar recovery neutralizes this advantage, suggesting that reducing particle size further may not be beneficial.

Effect of formulation on properties, stability, carvacrol release and antimicrobial activity of carvacrol emulsions

Eugenio Mauriello et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural design of essential oil emulsions was shown to impact their antimicrobial activity by affecting the release of encapsulated antimicrobial compounds. The fraction of carvacrol in the oil phase significantly influenced the properties of the emulsions, while its solubility in the aqueous phase was related to emulsion stability and antimicrobial activity. Emulsion droplets acted as micrometric tanks for carvacrol, steadily releasing it over time, with higher solubilization leading to increased antimicrobial activity.
