Identification of Fish Species and Targeted Genetic Modifications Based on DNA Analysis: State of the Art

Eliska Cermakova et al.

Summary: Food adulteration is a serious global issue that misleads consumers and poses health risks. Fish and fish products are often targeted for adulteration, especially by substituting high-quality species with cheaper ones. This can be dangerous for consumers, as different fish species have varying allergen content. DNA-based methods are considered powerful tools for identifying food fraud, as DNA is heat resistant and can reveal genetic modifications. This review discusses these DNA-based methods for fish authentication, their commercial applications, and the importance of comprehensive and regularly updated online databases.

Use of a portable near-infrared tool for rapid on-site inspection of freezing and hydrogen peroxide treatment of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis)

Sarah Curro et al.

Summary: Seafood, especially cephalopods, is susceptible to fraudulent activities. Near-infrared spectroscopy can effectively discriminate between different physical states of cuttlefish. The classification models performed best in distinguishing between fresh and frozen-thawed products, showing high performance in classifying bleaching treatments when fresh samples were excluded.

Chemometric Differentiation of Sole and Plaice Fish Fillets Using Three Near-Infrared Instruments

Nicola Cavallini et al.

Summary: Fish species substitution is a common form of fraud worldwide, and the development of reliable detection tools is crucial. This study focused on distinguishing between two similar flatfish species using near-infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that all three instruments provided accurate classification results, suggesting their potential application in real-world marketplaces and official control plans.

Country of origin label monitoring of musky and common octopuses (Eledone spp. and Octopus vulgaris) by means of a portable near-infrared spectroscopic device

Maria Olga Varra et al.

Summary: This study assessed the geographic origin of two octopus species using miniaturized and portable NIR spectroscopy instruments combined with machine learning. The results showed that linear tools were the most powerful and stable techniques, and the combination of portable NIR spectroscopy and machine learning could be used to create an automated analytical platform for on-site and in-line monitoring of fishery products.

Occurrence of domoic acid and cyclic imines in marine biota from Lebanon-Eastern Mediterranean Sea

Abed El Rahman Hassoun et al.

Summary: This study reports the presence of lipophilic toxins and cyclic imines in marine organisms collected from Lebanese coastal areas. The results showed that certain toxins were below the limit of detection in the marine biota, suggesting a low risk of health hazards from consuming seafood contaminated with these toxins in Lebanon.

Fast and Green Method to Control Frauds of Geographical Origin in Traded Cuttlefish Using a Portable Infrared Reflective Instrument

Sarah Curro et al.

Summary: This study utilized near infrared reflectance spectroscopy to assess the origin of cuttlefish, collected from five different fishing areas. The results suggest that NIRS is a rapid, green, and non-destructive method for authenticating the geographical origin of cuttlefish and preventing fraudulent activities. The SVM algorithm showed the best performance for geographical classification of cuttlefish.
