The role of calcium crosslinking and glycerol plasticizing on the physical and mechanical properties of superabsorbent Alginate/Quince Seed Gum films

Amir Abbas Abedini et al.

Summary: Highly absorbent films based on alginate and Quince Seed Gum (QSG) were fabricated using ionic crosslinking. Tensile tests showed that crosslinking time and CaCl2 concentration affected the mechanical properties of the films, while glycerol had a limited effect. The swelling test demonstrated that the optimal crosslinking condition resulted in a high swelling degree due to the hydrophilic groups on QSG and repulsion forces between biopolymers. The addition of glycerol affected the contact angle, solubility, and water vapor transmission (WVT) of the films. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that crosslinking improved the thermal stability, but glycerol had a negative effect. These alginate-QSG films are promising for biomedical applications like wound healing and drug delivery.

Advanced Technologies Applied to Enhance Properties and Structure of Films and Coatings: a Review

Victoria Hermes de Vargas et al.

Summary: Biopolymer films and coatings, as sustainable alternatives to traditional petroleum-based materials, have advantages in terms of biodegradability. However, their properties need improvement to compete at an industrial level. Physical treatments such as ohmic heating, ultrasound, and ultraviolet radiation are being explored to enhance the development of films and coatings. These technologies can alter the properties and structure of the films, offering an alternative to conventional methods. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms of each technology to tailor biopolymer films and coatings for specific applications.

Sensory evaluation and mixture design assessment of coffee-flavored liquor obtained from spent coffee grounds

Francesca Masino et al.

Summary: Spent coffee grounds are a source of bioactive compounds that can be extracted to create coffee-flavored liquor. By utilizing sensory techniques and mixture design, researchers were able to produce coffee-flavored liquors with a close sensory profile to the ideal one. The liquors showed intense black color, rich flavor, and high balance in terms of alcohol strength, bitterness, and sweetness.

Development and characterization of biopolymeric films of galactomannans recovered from spent coffee grounds

Gisella O. Coelho et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the development of biopolymeric film primarily made of galactomannans recovered from spent coffee grounds. It was found that cellulose significantly impacts the mechanical properties and water vapor permeability of the film, but removing part of the cellulose resulted in a film with different properties. The study highlights the potential of galactomannans in creating biodegradable packaging materials.

The interactions between the two negatively charged polysaccharides: Gum Arabic and alginate

Saman Sabet et al.

Summary: This study explored the interactions between gum arabic and alginate, finding that only specific fractions of gum arabic interact with alginate at pH 4. The intensity of interaction was significantly higher for glycoprotein compared to arabinogalactan protein. The findings suggest a potential electrostatic interaction between positively charged proteins in gum arabic and negatively charged carboxylate groups in alginate.

Coffee By-Products and Their Suitability for Developing Active Food Packaging Materials

Goncalo Oliveira et al.

Summary: The coffee industry generates various by-products from green coffee processing and roasting, which are often discarded despite their high potential value. These by-products, rich in polysaccharides and active biomolecules, are being considered for use in plastics production, offering antioxidant, antimicrobial, and other properties suitable for active food packaging. This review aims to identify sustainable strategies for valorizing coffee by-products and providing suitable raw materials for biodegradable plastics in the food packaging sector.
