Bottom-contact fisheries disturbance and signs of recovery of precious corals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and Emperor Seamount Chain

Amy R. Baco et al.

Summary: Deep-sea precious corals in the Coralliidae family have experienced a significant decline in abundance due to large-scale fisheries. While there are signs of recovery in areas that have been protected from fishing, the populations in areas that are still being trawled show limited recovery.

Genetic population structure of the precious coral Corallium japonicum in the Northwest Pacific

Hiroki Kise et al.

Summary: The genetic population structure of Corallium japonicum in the Northwest Pacific was examined using RAD-seq. Gene flow was found to be widespread, but larval dispersal simulations revealed limited gene flow between certain populations. The findings of this study provide valuable information for the effective management of C. japonicum.

Coral-ID: A forensically validated genetic test to identify precious coral material and its application to objects seized from illegal traffic

Bertalan Lendvay et al.

Summary: The production and trade of coral objects are globally important. However, identifying coral species based on color alone is difficult. In this study, a genetic assay called Coral-ID was developed to classify coral objects and distinguish protected species from non-protected species.

Synchrotron μ-XRF mapping analysis of trace elements in in-situ cultured Japanese red coral, Corallium japonicum

Summary: This study estimated the growth rate of Japanese red coral through in-situ culture and analyzed the uptake process of trace elements. The results showed that water temperature had an impact on the growth rings and the distribution of trace elements in the coral axis.

RADIOCARBON DATING OF PRECIOUS CORALS OFF THE SOUTHWEST COAST OF KOCHI PREFECTURE, SOUTHWEST JAPAN

Tomoyo Okumura et al.

Summary: Radiocarbon dating of precious coral colony fragments collected off the southwest coast of Kochi Prefecture, Japan, revealed that most coral deaths were due to natural causes and that precious corals started inhabiting the area at least around 7500 years ago. These findings could help establish sustainable fishery regulations.

The sub-fossil red coral of Sciacca (Sicily Channel, Mediterranean Sea): colony size and age estimates

Giorgio Bavestrello et al.

Summary: This study presents a morphometric description of the sub-fossil red coral population in the Sciacca area for the first time, estimating the annual growth rate and average lifespan. The results show that over several thousand years, the Sciacca red coral colonies have maintained their organic matrix structure with visible annual discontinuities. The radiocarbon dating revealed a wide range of ages for these colonies, with most falling between 2700 and 3900 years before present, indicating a long period of accumulation.

Population collapse of habitat-forming species in the Mediterranean: a long-term study of gorgonian populations affected by recurrent marine heatwaves

D. Gomez-Gras et al.

Summary: In a Mediterranean marine protected area, habitat-forming octocoral populations impacted by a severe marine heatwave in 2003 have not recovered after 15 years, facing collapse trajectories that may have been hindered by recurrent marine heatwaves. This highlights the significant risk recurrent marine heatwaves pose for the long-term integrity and functioning of emblematic temperate reefs.

Genome-Wide SNP Data Revealed Notable Spatial Genetic Structure in the Deep-Sea Precious Coral Corallium japonicum

Kenji Takata et al.

Summary: Estimating the spatial extent of gamete and larval dispersal of deep-sea coral species is challenging but crucial for their conservation. The study examined the spatial genetic structure of Corallium japonicum off the coast of Kochi, finding that over 700 neutral SNPs were needed to detect significant spatial genetic structure and suggesting the local extinction of the species within an approximately 11 km diameter should be avoided through over-harvesting prevention measures.
