The Ocean's labile DOC supply chain

Mary Ann Moran et al.

Summary: Microbes in the surface ocean play a crucial role in releasing, consuming, and exchanging labile metabolites at short time scales. However, the details of this process in the global carbon cycle are not well understood due to methodological challenges. A new compilation of published data suggests that approximately half of the ocean's net primary production is processed through the labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool, with contributions from living phytoplankton, dead and dying phytoplankton, and heterotrophic microbes and mesoplankton.

Optical characterization of dissolved organic matter in Kuroshio-Oyashio confluence region: Implication for water mass mixing

Yasong Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the concentration, composition, and distribution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Kuroshio-Oyashio confluence region. It found that bio-refractory DOM components are produced during the microbial transformation of labile organic matter, and the optical property of DOM can be used as a useful tracer for water masses in this region.

Dissolved Organic Carbon Along a Meridional Transect in the Western North Pacific Ocean: Distribution, Variation and Controlling Processes

Tiantian Ge et al.

Summary: The concentrations and distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in water samples collected along a meridional transect in the western North Pacific Ocean in November 2019 were reported. The dynamics of DOC are influenced by primary production, microbial consumption, hydrodynamic mixing, and circulation of different water masses.

Widespread distribution of allochthonous fluorescent dissolved organic matter in the intermediate water of the North Pacific

Youhei Yamashita et al.

Summary: The study highlights the Sea of Okhotsk as the major source region of allochthonous FDOM in the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), rather than the Bering Sea. Allochthonous FDOM derived from shelf sediments in the Sea of Okhotsk is conservatively distributed throughout the North Pacific via the circulation of intermediate water, especially the upper part of NPIW. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that FDOM can aid in determining the spatiotemporal distribution of NPIW and its mixing with other water masses in the deep ocean.

The impact of combining data sets of fluorescence excitation-emission matrices of dissolved organic matter from various aquatic sources on the information retrieved by PARAFAC modeling

Elli Pitta et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of co-analyzing datasets from different natural water sources in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea on PARAFAC analysis, finding both positive and negative effects. The reliability of components and similarity of common identified components were evaluated through residual analysis and correlation assessment. The study concluded that the resolution of extra components in combined analysis can have varying effects on model fit and should be carefully assessed.
