Titanium Cervical Cage Subsidence: Postoperative Computed Tomography Analysis Defining Incidence and Associated Risk Factors

Zachariah W. Pinter et al.

Summary: By conducting a retrospective cohort study, researchers precisely characterized the patterns of cervical cage subsidence and identified several risk factors. The study results indicate that subsidence is a common occurrence following ACDF surgery with titanium cervical cages and is not associated with an increased risk of pseudarthrosis.

The predictive value of psoas and paraspinal muscle parameters measured on MRI for severe cage subsidence after standalone lateral lumbar interbody fusion

Manuel Moser et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether the functional cross-sectional area (FCSA) of psoas and lumbar spine extensor muscles differs in levels with severe cage subsidence after SA-LLIF. The study found that higher psoas FCSA at L3 and psoas FCSA/VBA at L3 and L4 were independent risk factors for severe cage subsidence in men.

Modeling the susceptibility of an uneven-aged broad-leaved forest to snowstorm damage using spatially explicit machine learning

Saeid Shabani et al.

Summary: This study modeled and spatially visualized the susceptibility of a forest stand in northern Iran to snowstorm damage using the random forest (RF) and logistic regression (LR) methods. The RF model outperformed the LR model in both training and validation phases, identifying slope, aspect, and wind effect as the variables with the greatest impacts on forest stand sustainability to snowstorm damage. Approximately 30% of the study area was categorized as highly and very highly susceptible to snowstorms. The results can inform forest managers in developing adaptive forest management plans for snowstorm readiness and recovery.

Risk Factors for Subsidence Following Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion

Athan G. Zavras et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify patient and procedural risk factors for subsidence in patients undergoing anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF). The results showed that age, BMI, ASA, and osteoporosis were all associated with subsidence. Anterior cage placement remained the only independent predictor. Subsidence was also associated with a higher rate of subsequent adjacent segment surgery.

Novel MRI-based vertebral bone quality score as a predictor of cage subsidence following transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion

Yung-Hsueh Hu et al.

Summary: The ability of MRI-based VBQ score to predict cage subsidence and other risk factors associated with this complication was investigated. The results showed that increased VBQ scores, posteriorly placed cages, and kidney-shaped cages were risk factors for cage subsidence. The VBQ score was a good predictor of cage subsidence and moderately correlated with DEXA T-scores and the amount of cage subsidence.

Machine learning approach for hemorrhagic transformation prediction: Capturing predictors' interaction

Ahmed F. Elsaid et al.

Summary: This study aimed to predict hemorrhagic transformation (HT) in patients with ischemic stroke using machine learning algorithms. Cerebral microbleeds, NIHSS, and infarction size were identified as the best predictors of HT. The random forest classifier (RFC) and gradient boosting classifier (GBC) demonstrated superior performance in predicting HT.

Vertebral bone quality score independently predicts cage subsidence following transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion

Mohamed A. R. Soliman et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score can predict the occurrence of postoperative cage subsidence following transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgery. The results showed that a higher VBQ score was significantly associated with an increased risk of subsidence and was the only significant independent predictor of subsidence after TLIF. This suggests that the MRI-VBQ score may be a valuable tool for identifying patients at risk of cage subsidence following TLIF.

The predictive value of a novel site-specific MRI-based bone quality assessment, endplate bone quality (EBQ), for severe cage subsidence among patients undergoing standalone lateral lumbar interbody fusion

Conor Jones et al.

Summary: The study investigated the predictive value of a novel MRI-based bone assessment for severe cage subsidence after lumbar interbody fusion. The results showed that site-specific MRI bone assessment was more effective in predicting complications than standard whole-region measurements. This assessment method could provide valuable insights into a patient's risk for severe subsidence.

Forearm T-score as a predictor of cage subsidence in patients with degenerative lumbar spine disease following posterior single-segment lumbar interbody fusion

Hong-yu Pu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the accuracy of forearm T-score and lumbar spine HU values in predicting cage subsidence after PLIF, and found that lower forearm T-scores and lower lumbar spine HU values were significantly associated with the occurrence of cage subsidence. Forearm T-score was more accurate in predicting cage subsidence than lumbar spine HU values, and forearm dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry may be a fast, simple, and reliable method for predicting cage subsidence following PLIF.

Hierarchical Neighbors Embedding

Shenglan Liu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a hierarchical neighbors embedding (HNE) method, which improves the performance of manifold learning in dealing with data sparsity by enhancing local connections. The experimental results demonstrate that the HNE-based methods can achieve better embeddings with improved topological and geometrical properties. HNE shows its superiority in handling data of general distributions and sparsely sampled data.
