Risk factors for secondary ocular hypertension in silicone oil-filled eyes following transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy - A prospective cohort study

Manoj Prathapan et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors for secondary ocular hypertension (OHT) after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with silicone oil (SO) injection. A prospective cohort study was conducted on 46 eyes of 42 patients who underwent PPV with SO injection. The results showed a significant increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) at all postoperative visits. Short-term OHT was associated with younger age (< 50 years), rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), and pseudophakia, while preexisting glaucoma was the only independent risk factor for long-term OHT.

Optical coherence tomography-based misdiagnosis and morphological distinction in pachychoroid neovasculopathy vs. polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy

Jakob Siedlecki et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the misdiagnosis rate of non-aneurysmatic pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV) as aneurysmatic pachychoroid type 1 choroidal neovascularization/polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PAT1/PCV), and identified optical coherence tomography (OCT) features that help distinguish between the two conditions. It was found that a significant proportion of eyes diagnosed with PNV actually had PAT1/PCV, and measuring maximum pigment epithelium detachment (PED) height, sub-retinal hyperreflective material (SHRM), sub-retinal ring-like structures (SRRLS), and sub-RPE fluid can aid in the accurate diagnosis of PAT1/PCV.

Evaluation and comparison of ocular biometric parameters obtained with Tomey OA-2000 in silicone oil-filled aphakic eyes

Yongqun Xiong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a new non-contact instrument (OA-2000) for measuring ocular biometric parameters of silicone oil (SO)-filled aphakic eyes, compared with IOLMaster 700. The results showed good correlation and agreement between the measurements of Kf, Ks, and AL obtained by OA-2000 and IOLMaster 700. The OA-2000 demonstrated excellent repeatability in SO-filled aphakic eyes.

Silicone Oil Tamponade Removal: Which Technique Is More Effective? An X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy Study

Tommaso Rossi et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of two surgical techniques (triple air-fluid exchange and balanced salt solution lavage) in removing silicone oil emulsion tamponade after pars plana vitrectomy. The results showed that triple air-fluid exchange was able to remove silicone oil more effectively, and the eye wall actively interacted with the silicone oil emulsion.

Influence of ocular biometric parameters such as effective lens position, keratometry, and axial length on near add power of multifocal intraocular lens

Ping Wu et al.

Summary: Visual quality after mIOL implantation is influenced by factors such as residual ametropia, posterior capsule opacification, and patient vision habits. The near add power of mIOLs given by manufacturers is not completely consistent with the actual spectacle plane add power. Ocular biometric parameters also play a role in the near add power of mIOLs.

Comparison of axial length measurements in silicone oil-filled eyes using SS-OCT and partial coherence interferometry

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of different devices in measuring axial length in silicone oil-filled eyes. The results showed that OA2000 is the preferred device for measuring axial length in silicone oil-filled eyes, while IOLMaster 500 and IOLMaster 700 tend to overestimate axial length, especially in long eyes, and require adjustment.

Retinal and Corneal Changes Associated with Intraocular Silicone Oil Tamponade

Mariantonia Ferrara et al.

Summary: Silicone oils play a crucial role as long-term intraocular tamponades in vitreoretinal surgery, but they can lead to multiple severe complications. Recent advances in ophthalmic imaging have improved our understanding of the microscopic changes in the retina and cornea caused by silicone oils, offering the potential for optimized monitoring and management for patients with silicone oil-filled eyes.

Summary: This study compared the axial length measurement obtained by A-scan biometry and LENSTAR-LS 900 in silicone oil-filled eyes. It found that LENSTAR provided more accurate biometry than A-scan in SiO-filled eyes. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between the measurements following SiO removal.
