Trends in SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold values in the Czech Republic from April 2020 to April 2022

Dita Musalkova et al.

Summary: The inability to predict the evolution of the COVID-19 epidemic hindered effective crisis response. However, population Ct values from RT-qPCR tests proved to be helpful predictive tools in managing viral epidemics. Early measurement of Ct values could indicate viral load differences in different groups and changes in transmission, while monitoring Ct values and positivity rates could provide evidence on the effectiveness of prevention measures.

At-home sample collection is an effective strategy for diagnosis and management of symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers

Devon P. Humphreys et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that at-home sample collection is a viable option for improving testing accessibility, detecting asymptomatic cases, and curbing preventable transmission of COVID-19.

Nasopharyngeal swabs vs. saliva sampling for SARS-CoV-2 detection: A cross-sectional survey of acceptability for caregivers and children after experiencing both methods

Francois Gagnon et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the acceptability of saliva sampling and nasopharyngeal swabs for SARS-CoV-2 testing among primary decision makers and their children. The findings showed that although youth preferred saliva sampling, primary decision makers remained highly accepting of both methods. Acceptance of nasopharyngeal swabs varied depending on the testing indication and was influenced by perceived test accuracy.

The Relationship Between Population-Level SARS-CoV-2 Cycle Threshold Values and Trend of COVID-19 Infection: Longitudinal Study

Paria Dehesh et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the daily trend of average Ct values and COVID-19 dynamics, as well as to find the best lag. The results showed a significant negative correlation between daily average Ct values and COVID-19 dynamics. It was found that a 30-day lag could predict increases in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Overall decrease in SARS-CoV-2 viral load and reduction in clinical burden: the experience of a hospital in northern Italy

Chiara Piubelli et al.

Summary: This study found a decrease in the proportion of COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care over time, along with decreasing viral load median values. As the epidemiological context shifts from high-to low-transmission settings, individuals are presumably exposed to lower viral loads, which may result in less severe clinical manifestations.

A Meta-analysis on the Role of Children in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 in Household Transmission Clusters

Yanshan Zhu et al.

Summary: The role of children in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 remains controversial, with studies showing lower transmission rates when children are index cases and lower secondary attack rates in pediatric household contacts compared to adults. These findings have implications for COVID-19 management and potential vaccine prioritization strategies.

Use of the p-values as a size-dependent function to address practical differences when analyzing large datasets

Estibaliz Gomez-de-Mariscal et al.

Summary: This study examines the utilization of p-values in biomedical research, proposing a new approach to address the size effect in p-value interpretation for datasets with large sample sizes. The introduction of new descriptive parameters aims to reduce uncertainty in determining the existence of biological differences between compared experiments.

Nucleic Acid Testing of SARS-CoV-2

Hee Min Yoo et al.

Summary: This review discusses the importance of accuracy and sensitivity in COVID-19 diagnosis, highlighting various detection methods such as PCR, digital PCR, and RT-LAMP. Non-conventional molecular diagnostic methods like NGS, CRISPR technology, and nanotechnology are also improving the accuracy of COVID-19 testing. Additionally, the standardization of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid testing and the use of reference materials as resources are emphasized.

Estimating infectiousness throughout SARS-CoV-2 infection course

Terry C. Jones et al.

Summary: In a study of SARS-CoV-2 cases in Germany, it was found that younger subjects had lower viral loads but higher cell culture replication probabilities compared to older subjects. Additionally, 8% of subjects had viral loads above 10(9) copies per swab, with a third of them being presymptomatic, asymptomatic, or mildly symptomatic individuals with a mean age of 37.6 years. The B.1.1.7 lineage infections had a higher viral load and cell culture replication probability than non-B.1.1.7 subjects.

Estimating epidemiologic dynamics from cross-sectional viral load distributions

James A. Hay et al.

Summary: Population distribution of viral loads changes during an epidemic, and Ct values from random samples can improve estimates of an epidemic's trajectory. Combining data from multiple samples enhances the precision and robustness of estimation. These methods can be applied to real-time estimates of epidemic trajectories for outbreak management and response.
