Rapid Diagnosis of Mycobacterium marinum Infection by Next-Generation Sequencing: A Case Report

Fanfan Xing et al.

Summary: This study presents the first report of using next-generation sequencing (NGS) for diagnosing histology- and culture-proven Mycobacterium marinum infection. The NGS technology using Oxford Nanopore Technologies' MinION device allowed for a microbiological diagnosis in less than 2 days, compared to the 20 days required to isolate the mycobacterium from tissue biopsy. NGS is particularly useful for detecting culture-negative and slow-growing microorganism infections, making it a valuable tool in routine clinical microbiology laboratories.

Diverse and atypical manifestations of Q fever in a metropolitan city hospital: Emerging role of next-generation sequencing for laboratory diagnosis of Coxiella burnetii

Fanfan Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of Q fever in a tertiary hospital in Shenzhen, China were described. The study found that Q fever patients had diverse and atypical clinical manifestations. The incidence of Q fever is likely to be underestimated and next-generation sequencing is becoming increasingly important for the diagnosis of culture-negative infections like Q fever.

Identification of a novel drug-resistant community-acquired Nocardia spp. in a patient with bronchiectasis

Zhengtu Li et al.

Summary: A previously unknown Nocardia species (GZ2020(T)) was isolated from a patient with bronchiectasis and recurrent pneumonia. It is resistant to multiple drugs but susceptible to linezolid and moxifloxacin, posing a health threat to patients.

Rapid Genomic Diagnosis of Fungal Infections in the Age of Next-Generation Sequencing

Chi-Ching Tsang et al.

Summary: NGS technology has matured into clinical applications, showing potential advantages in diagnosing difficult-to-grow fungi and cases with low fungal loads. Studies have revealed that fungal infections diagnosed by NGS present some different characteristics from general epidemiology, such as a low HIV-positive rate among patients with P.jirovecii infections.
