Electrochemical Production of Sodium Hypochlorite from Salty Wastewater Using a Flow-by Porous Graphite Electrode

Ahmed A. Afify et al.

Summary: The production of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) from salty wastewater using an electrochemical cell was investigated. Various factors such as current density, flow rate, electrode spacing, and salinity were examined to optimize conversion efficiency. The highest NaOCl yield of 20.6% was achieved with a graphite electrode at specific conditions. Statistical analysis and regression techniques were employed to establish a correlation for NaOCl production. This study provides insights into the production of NaOCl using a continuous flow system from salty wastewater and its potential industrial applications.

Unlocking the Secrets of River Pollution: Analyzing Organic Pollutants in Sediments-Experimental Study

Sadeq Abdullah Abdo Alkhadher et al.

Summary: The release of untreated wastewater into rivers can lead to water pollution, the spread of waterborne diseases, harm to ecosystems, contamination of soil and groundwater, as well as air pollution and respiratory problems. This study used linear alkylbenzene (LAB) as a molecular chemical marker to investigate recent anthropogenic loads in rivers. Surface sediment samples were collected from the Muar and Kim Kim rivers and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated significant differences in LAB concentration and composition, suggesting the need for improved wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the effectiveness of LAB as a marker for identifying anthropogenic wastewater contamination.

Wastewater reuse in agriculture: Prospects and challenges

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: Considering water scarcity and increased water consumption, sustainable water recycling and wastewater reuse are urgent. A comprehensive literature review reveals that poor treatment of wastewater leads to increased pathogen and microbial threats, plant and soil contamination, as well as potential long-term health risks from emerging pollutants. Standardized analytical techniques should be developed to assess the effects of hazardous chemicals and heavy metals on human health.

Combined partial denitrification/anammox process for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: Recently, the combined partial denitrification and anammox (PD/anammox) process using organic matter in municipal wastewater has gained attention for sustainable N removal. It offers advantages such as reduced dissolved oxygen demand, lower organic carbon requirement, less excess sludge production, and lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional nitrification-denitrification. This review discusses the latest improvements in PD/anammox systems and focuses on the production/consumption pathways of critical intermediate NO2-. The C/N ratio and concentration of dosed organic carbon are crucial for optimal efficiency, as overgrowth of denitrifying bacteria can negatively impact anammox activity. Microorganism competition in single-stage PD/anammox systems plays a key role in achieving efficient N removal from mainstream wastewater. Challenges and limitations in recognizing inhibition mechanisms and performance inhibitors are also addressed. Future research should explore combining PD/anammox with other processes and developing self-supporting bacterial systems to enhance total nitrogen removal efficiency.

Influence of urban catchment characteristics and rainfall origins on the phenomenon of stormwater flooding: Case study

Bartosz Szelag et al.

Summary: This study presents a methodology to analyze the impact of urbanization on the number of floods in an urban catchment over a long-term period. A mathematical model is used to predict the multiannual number of stormwater floods, taking into account the dynamic changes in the urban catchment over the subsequent years. Logistic regression is applied to predict flood occurrences during rainfall events. The model can be applied to catchments with different characteristics and allows for the development of early warning systems based on the identification of rainfall origins.

Trace metal contamination and species-specific bioaccumulation in the Zhoushan Fishery, northwestern East China Sea

Weihua Feng et al.

Summary: The study found that metal concentrations in water and sediment in the Zhoushan Fishery were generally below safety thresholds, except for Cu, As, and Cr in sediment. High levels of metal contamination were found in the west of the fishery, likely due to pollution from large international ports and chemical industries in Hangzhou Bay. Despite some exceedances of metal thresholds in crustacean species, a health risk assessment indicated that seafood consumption from the area is safe, with a potential risk for local consumers who prefer crustaceans.
