Effect of different manufacturing methods on polyamide reverse-osmosis membranes for desalination: Insights from molecular dynamics simulations

Ying Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different manufacturing methods on the properties of polyamide membranes. The results show that membranes formed with 3D-printing and molecular layer-by-layer deposition have similar performances, while those formed with interfacial polymerization have faster water transport but poorer compressibility.

Optimizing pressure retarded osmosis spacer geometries: An experimental and CFD modeling study

Joshua Benjamin et al.

Summary: Existing desalination plants face challenges of high energy costs and environmental impacts. Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) technology can mitigate these issues by capturing the potential energy in the salinity gradient. However, PRO faces the challenge of concentration polarization (CP), which can be reduced using membrane spacers but they also increase the pressure drop along the feed channel.

Performance model for reverse osmosis

Ahmed Yousry et al.

Summary: To meet the growing global demand for freshwater, seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) has become a widely used technology. However, the performance of a SWRO system can be complex and hard to predict, with high energy consumption. Therefore, real-time monitoring and optimization of system performance are crucial.

High performance polyester reverse osmosis desalination membrane with chlorine resistance

Yujian Yao et al.

Summary: A chlorine-resistant polyester reverse osmosis membrane has been developed to prevent biofouling and increase sustainability in desalination and wastewater reuse. The membrane exhibits high salt rejection and water permeability, even after exposure to chlorine for biofouling prevention. This chlorine-resistant membrane is expected to greatly advance reverse osmosis desalination technology.

Roles and performance enhancement of feed spacer in spiral wound membrane modules for water treatment: A 20-year review on research evolvement

Weichen Lin et al.

Summary: Membrane technologies, particularly in SWM modules, have been widely utilized for water treatment, wastewater reclamation, and sea-water desalination. The feed spacer in these modules plays a crucial role in promoting flow channels, enhancing mass transfer, and creating fluid mixing. However, it also leads to issues such as increased feed channel pressure drop and localized stagnant zones, which can cause membrane fouling.

Clinical Autopsy of a Reverse Osmosis Membrane Module

Graciela Gonzalez-Gil et al.

Summary: The desalination of seawater using reverse osmosis membranes is an effective solution to global freshwater scarcity, but membrane performance can be hindered by fouling. Membrane autopsies are crucial for identifying and addressing different types of fouling. Measurements of microbial cells, ATP, and TOC abundances on the membrane surface provide insights into the contributions of biofouling and organic fouling, highlighting the need for improved fouling control mechanisms.
