Simultaneous phosphorus removal and adsorbents recovery with Ca-PAC assisted adsorption dynamic membrane system: Removal performance and influencing factors

Lucheng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Ca(OH)2 treated powdered activated carbon (Ca-PAC) assisted adsorption dynamic membrane system was proposed for simultaneous phosphorus adsorption and micrometer scale adsorbent recovery. The effect of Ca(OH)2 concentration on phosphorus removal rate was evaluated and the main phosphorus removal mechanism was determined to be ligand exchange between hydroxyl on Ca-PAC and phosphate. The integrated adsorption dynamic membrane system using Ca-PAC showed effective phosphorus adsorption and considerable micrometer scale adsorbent recovery.

Adsorption performance of phosphate in water by mixed precursor base geopolymers

Wentao Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigates the capability of phosphate adsorption using fly ash and metakaolin as raw materials. The results show that the removal efficiency of phosphate was higher at 0.8 M compared to 1.2 M alkali activator. The FA + MK-0.8 sample had the highest removal efficiency of 94.21%, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 36.02 mg/kg. The adsorption of phosphate followed a pseudo-second-order model and was mainly controlled by film diffusion. The formation of new zeolite structures in FA + MK-0.8 and electrostatic gravitation, ligand exchange, and surface complexation were identified as the mechanisms of phosphate adsorption.

Kinetics and capacities of non-reactive phosphorus (NRP) sorption to crushed autoclaved aerated concrete (CAAC)

Shuting Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential and mechanism of crushed autoclaved aerated concrete (CAAC) in removing non-reactive phosphorus (NRP). The results showed that the removal of NRP by CAAC was a chemisorption process and involved a two-step pore diffusion process. Different NRP species exhibited varying degrees of desorption, with most NRP being irreversibly adsorbed on CAAC. In addition, the adsorption of different NRP species by CAAC in mesocosm experiments differed from the results of laboratory adsorption experiments, suggesting the importance of possible biodegradation for NRP conversion and removal.

Rationally designed and hierarchically structured functionalized aluminium organic frameworks incorporated chitosan hybrid beads for defluoridation of water

Antonysamy Jeyaseelan et al.

Summary: In this study, aluminium-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were developed for defluoridation. The MOFs exhibited high selectivity, porosity, and surface area. However, the powder form of the MOFs had limitations in practical applications. To overcome these limitations, chitosan-supported MOFs were developed for effective fluoride adsorption. The synthesized beads showed high defluoridation capacities. Various parameters were investigated to optimize the adsorption process. The study also evaluated the thermodynamic and kinetic properties, as well as the reusability and suitability of the beads in field conditions.

Synthesis of high quality boehmite and ?-alumina for phosphorus removal from water works sludge by extraction and hydrothermal treatment

Tuan Van Truong et al.

Summary: Alum sludge was used to synthesize boehmite and gamma-alumina, which were found to be effective in removing phosphate. The degree of crystallinity had a greater impact on the phosphate adsorption of boehmite, and a lower pH resulted in higher phosphate adsorption on both boehmite and gamma-alumina.

Development and characterization of hydroxyapatite layered lanthanum organic frameworks by template method for defluoridation of water

Antonysamy Jeyaseelan et al.

Summary: The template preparation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) layered lanthanum-benzene tricarboxylic acid based metal organic frameworks (La-BTC MOFs) for defluoridation of water was investigated. The nucleation and growth of La-based MOFs were carried out in the prepared HAp hard template using layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The coulomb and chelation contacts on HAp surface between Ca2+ ions and COO-organic ligands of La-BTC MOFs played vital roles in the preparation process. The defluoridation capacity (DC) of HAp-La based MOFs was evaluated through batch experiments. The physicochemical properties, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and the mechanism of defluoridation using HAp-La based MOFs were also studied. The field and reusability investigations were conducted to explore their potential applicability.

Facile Fabrication of Zirconium-Organic Framework-Embedded Chitosan Hybrid Spheres for Efficient Fluoride Adsorption

Antonysamy Jeyaseelan et al.

Summary: In this research, zirconium-organic frameworks (Zr@BDC MOFs) were prepared for efficient fluoride removal, but limitations like column blockage and pressure drop were encountered. To overcome this, the MOFs were modified with a chitosan biopolymer to create Zr@BDC-CS spheres, which showed high defluoridation capacities and complexation and electrostatic adsorption mechanisms. Studies on adsorption isotherms and kinetics, as well as thermodynamic properties, were conducted to explore the fluoride removal process, ultimately proving the suitability and reusability of the Zr@BDC-CS spheres at the field level.

Fluoride removal from water using alumina and aluminum-based composites: A comprehensive review of progress

Sikpaam Issaka Alhassan et al.

Summary: Fluoride concentration in drinking water has global health implications, with over 200 million people drinking fluorinated water. The use of alumina and aluminum-based composites for fluoride removal through the adsorption method is ideal due to its low cost, availability of adsorbents, pollution-free treated water, and environmental friendliness. The adsorbents can easily form aluminumfluoro complexes (AlFx) for enhanced adsorption at near-neutral pH, making them the most suitable for removing fluoride.
