Fouling characterization and treatment of water reuse concentrate with membrane distillation: Do organics really matter

Luke K. Presson et al.

Summary: This study investigates fouling and scaling mechanisms in membrane distillation (MD) treatment for concentrated brines, and proposes pretreatment strategies to mitigate flux decline. Organic fouling has minimal impact on flux, while calcium ions are the major contributor. Pretreatment with biological activated carbon (BAC) effectively removes organic compounds and reduces calcium mass, while fluidized bed crystallization removes multivalent ions without affecting flux. Membrane cleaning with acid washing and temperature reversal can recover a significant amount of water flux.

Reclaiming wastewater with increasing salinity for potable water reuse: Water recovery and energy consumption during reverse osmosis desalination

Xin Wei et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the energy consumed in recovering water from higher-salinity streams and considers various energy-saving strategies. The energy savings was greater for closed-circuit reverse osmosis as influent salinity increases. The energy savings from desalinating higher-salinity streams separately increased as the salinity difference between the two streams increased.

Evaluating the impact of pretreatment processes on fouling of reverse osmosis membrane by secondary wastewater

Y-H. Cai et al.

Summary: The pretreatment of secondary effluents significantly impacts the fouling potential of reverse osmosis membranes, with different methods showing varying effects on indices. The study found that BCMF pretreatment reduced fouling potential in all three indices, while UF pretreatment had a greater impact on reducing specific types of fouling.

Modeling the energy consumption of potable water reuse schemes

Emily W. Tow et al.

Summary: Potable reuse of municipal wastewater is often the lowest-energy option for increasing the availability of fresh water. However, limited data on energy consumption and various factors affecting it make estimating energy requirements complex. This study provides a framework for understanding when potable reuse is the lowest-energy option for augmenting water supply by synthesizing available data and developing a simple model.
