Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk assessment of antibiotics in Nanming river: Contribution from wastewater treatment plant and implications of urban river syndrome

Summary: In order to study the occurrence and spatial distribution of antibiotics in the Nanming River in Guiyang, China, 27 water samples were collected. Twelve antibiotics were analyzed using solid phase extraction (SPE) combined with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), and a total of eight antibiotics were detected, indicating the prevalence of antibiotics in the study area. The total antibiotic concentrations ranged from 2.3 to 1097.4 ng/L and fluoroquinolones were found to be the dominant antibiotics.

Multistage defense response of microalgae exposed to pharmaceuticals in wastewater

Summary: In recent years, the use of microalgae for the bioremediation of pharmaceuticals has gained attention. While most studies have focused on the removal performance of microalgae, their defensive response to pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment has been overlooked. This study investigated the defensive systems of microalgae in synthetic wastewater and found that pharmaceuticals could bind to EPS, alleviating their direct toxicity to microalgae. Physiological analyses showed increased activity of antioxidant enzymes, suggesting a reduction in oxidative stress. Additionally, enzyme activities related to biotransformation and detoxification were upregulated, indicating the potential for the degradation and transformation of pharmaceuticals in microalgae.

Sustainable conversion of antibiotic wastewater using microbial fuel cells: Energy harvesting and resistance mechanism analysis

Summary: Tetracycline (TC) can be rapidly and efficiently degraded in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) due to the synergistic effect of microbial metabolism and electrical stimulation. Different TC concentrations have varying effects on the bioelectric performance of MFCs, with 10 mg/L TC promoting properties such as a maximum power density of 1744.4 +/- 74.9 mW/cm2. The microbial community composition in the MFCs is affected by the initial TC concentration, with Geo-bacter and Chryseobacterium being dominant in the anode biofilm and Azoarcus and Pseudomonas being prominent in the effluent. Furthermore, the presence of TC leads to an increase in the relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), posing a greater risk of ARGs spreading, and network analysis suggests certain microorganisms and MGEs may serve as potential hosts for multiple ARGs.

Insights into the microalgae-bacteria consortia treating swine wastewater: Symbiotic mechanism and resistance genes analysis

Antimicrobial Resistance in Rivers: A Review of the Genes Detected and New Challenges

Summary: River ecosystems are vital for the water cycle and provide essential habitats and resources for various organisms. However, antibiotics as emerging contaminants pose significant challenges as they can enter rivers from different sources. The presence of antibiotics and associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can contribute to the development of ARGs in natural bacteria, which can also spread to clinically important pathogens. Unfortunately, the monitoring of antibiotics and ARGs is currently not a priority for national or international water quality control authorities. This study reviews the common antibiotics and ARGs detected in rivers and highlights the need for assessing baseline ARG levels in non-impacted rivers for future environmental regulations. Furthermore, other factors like chemical mixtures, climate change, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on antibiotic resistance are discussed.
