Photocatalytic synergistic biofilms enhance tetracycline degradation and conversion

Chuanbao Xiao et al.

Summary: This report proposes a photobiocatalytic synergistic system involving the coupling of GeO2/Zn-doped phosphotungstic acid hydrate/TiO2-loaded photocatalytic optical hollow fibers (POHFs) and an algal-bacterial biofilm to promote the efficient degradation and conversion of tetracyclines in wastewater. The system rapidly reduces the toxicity and increases the biodegradability of tetracycline-containing wastewater.

Effect of UV-light exposure duration, light source, and aging on nitroguanidine (NQ) degradation product profile and toxicity

Lee C. Moores et al.

Summary: The toxicity of NQ increased with increasing UV-degradation, where toxicity-inducing degradation products were stable over 1-2 weeks; increased toxicity was validated from natural-sunlight degradation of NQ, however, toxicity was lower than UV-photoreactor degraded NQ; and the identity of specific toxic UV-degradation products remains elusive where carefully-designed mass-balance experiments and toxicity testing are needed to provide definitive identification.

Application of EPR Spectroscopy in TiO2 and Nb2O5 Photocatalysis

Osama Al-Madanat et al.

Summary: The interaction of light with semiconducting materials, particularly in photocatalysis, has recently gained attention due to its potential applications in green energy and environmental remediation. The characterization of the electronic structure of semiconductors is crucial for understanding the photocatalytic process, with EPR spectroscopy serving as a valuable tool for monitoring photoinduced phenomena. EPR studies on titanium dioxide and niobium oxide photocatalysts have provided valuable insights into the mechanisms and behaviors of photogenerated species, highlighting the importance of electron donors and acceptors in the solid or liquid phase photocatalytic processes.
