Fouling control investigation by pH optimization during olive mill wastewater ultrafiltration

C. Saf et al.

Summary: Research has shown that membrane fouling in ultrafiltration of olive mill wastewater varies at different pH values. pH 6 demonstrates higher productivity and more easily removable fouling, making it a more relevant condition for ultrafiltration.

Identification of fouling mechanisms in cross-flow microfiltration of olive-mills wastewater

Teresa Poerio et al.

Summary: Microfiltration is an effective and feasible green process for wastewater treatment. However, fouling can severely impact its efficiency and economic viability. This study evaluated the extent of membrane fouling and its effect on flux decline during microfiltration of olive mills wastewater. It also assessed the cleaning efficiency and identified the dominant fouling mechanisms for different membrane materials.

Traceability of polyphenols in cocoa during the postharvest and industrialization processes and their biological antioxidant potential

Maritza Gil et al.

Summary: Noncommunicable diseases are responsible for a significant portion of premature adult deaths globally. Functional foods like cocoa, known for their polyphenol content, have been promoted for their potential health benefits. However, postharvest and industrialization processes may reduce the concentration of these bioactive compounds in cocoa, affecting their health-promoting properties. Studies have identified concentration ranges of polyphenols in cocoa and discussed their antioxidant potential and health-related benefits.

Ultrafiltration performance of spent brewer's yeast protein hydrolysate: Impact of pH and membrane material on fouling

Gabriela Vollet Marson et al.

Summary: This study investigated membrane selectivity and fouling during dead-end ultrafiltration of protein hydrolysate from spent brewer's yeast, a high protein brewing by-product. The results showed that using PES membrane at pH 5 can achieve higher peptide retention, while the protein hydrolysate at pH 8 exhibited better ultrafiltration performance with less susceptibility to protein adsorption. The main foulants were confirmed to be peptides, and hydrophilic membranes along with feed at pH 8 improved the UF performance of spent brewer's yeast hydrolysate.

Consequences of membrane aging on real or misleading evaluation of membrane cleaning by flux measurements

Murielle Rabiller-Baudry et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the resistance and residual irreversible fouling of the membrane in skim milk ultrafiltration are significantly influenced by the chlorine dose received during the membrane's service life, highlighting the importance of managing this factor at an industrial scale.

Role of dietary polyphenols on gut microbiota, their metabolites and health benefits

S. Mithul Aravind et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, there has been intensive research on the beneficial health roles of dietary polyphenols in preventing oxidative stress related chronic diseases. As our understanding of the role of gut microbiota advances, the need to examine the prebiotic role of dietary polyphenols has emerged. Further research should focus on the importance of human trials and the links of polyphenols-gut microbiota-nerve-brain to unlock the mechanisms behind the observed benefits of dietary polyphenols.

Modelling the critical roles of zeta potential and contact angle on colloidal fouling with a coupled XDLVO - collision attachment approach

Junxia Liu et al.

Summary: The model predicts that severe fouling occurs at low ζ(2) values, and increasing ζ(2) can significantly reduce the membrane fouling rate. The role of contact angle θ is critical, as fouling is dramatically reduced when θ is below (or above) a certain threshold value.

Terpenoids and Polyphenols as Natural Antioxidant Agents in Food Preservation

Ignacio Gutierrez-del-Rio et al.

Summary: Synthetic antioxidant food additives like BHA, BHT and TBHQ are facing challenges due to negative consumer perception, prompting food manufacturers to seek safer natural alternatives. Terpenoids and polyphenols, widely distributed in fruits and vegetables, show broad antioxidant effects and have the potential to replace synthetic antioxidants in food preservation, particularly in preventing lipid oxidation in high fat-containing foods.
